mild 460 build questions?

Got a buddy with 70 torino. Had the original 429 cj in it. Well, blew her up but good. Head of the valve went through cyl, and head. So he bought a brand new set of the older version aluminum Kaase cobra jet heads. I will mildly port them a bit. Already has the headers, blue thunder intake with an 850 deamon. He wants to get 500 to 550 horse out of it. 10.5 compression, hyd flat tappet cam. Question is stock rods with arp bolts should be enough?? Is making them full floaters worth it?? How big of cam? Thanks much!

mild 460 build questions?

i can only tell you what i have done i built a 460 old t/bird motor ,that had rods resized, pressed piston pins, and lighter rods than CJs not as strong i believe, and it raced for over three years,no problem 10-28 @ 129 or so he went more mph on cold day. This motor was dished piston 22ccs and raced every weekend.never over 6,200rpm . The floating of wrist pins won't hurt, esspecially if the pistons he's got are already cut for the true-arks clips, as we had one come out of our boss 351 race car and touched the wall , but we were above 7,000 certain times. hope this helps bill

What size cam you use will depend on what tranny/converter/rear gear ratio you are planning on using and how much street time the car will have. Biggest problem is that the car is on the heavy side, not all that big of a deal really. 10.5-1 compression is good, what rpm is the intake rated for? The rods will be fine as long as they have been resized with good arp bolts. Make sure the assembly is balanced and all the parts are matched to work with each other. Chris

Rods will work. Older bolts will work but ARP ones would be much better. Cam about a .234 degs on int. .245 on exh. dur @ .050, lift about .565"-.580". You'll need a 9 or 10" convertor. Floating pins, you don't need them.
