Performance parts for 2001 Explorer 4.0 v6 engine
A chip can be burned for just about any ford, but that won't get you alot. I think you have a five speed automatic behind that V6 and I don't think it will take a ton of abuse. About your best bet is to custom mount a supercharger. The 4.0 in the explorer is a stand along engine. It isn't in a family like other engines. Examples of engine families are (302,351) (429,460) (352,360,390,427,42 and newer (2.5L,3.0L) (4.6, 5.4, 6.. There has never been a performance version of the 4.0 produced by ford and no one builds performance parts. You are out of luck if you want to buy something off the shelf. Now, back in the 90s when the explorer and ranger had the OHV 4.0 you could get all sorts of parts...well mass air meter, throttle body and maybe headers but there aren't any parts for the OHC 4.0. It would cost you big to try and custom make stuff. If you could weld then you could make some headers. There is plenty of room under the hood of a 2001 explorer. The bay was designed for the 4.6 32v. If I were you and was just stuck on making my 2001 ex run then I found get on carparts.com and look for a 2004 lincoln aviator that has been wrapped around a tree. Get the motor, trans, computer and everything else. Is has the 4.6L 32V in it. Put some headers on it and have a 330 HP Explorer. Or I would custom mount a charger.
