5 Bolt 289 to 351w swap question...

Guys,

I am going to pull out my five bolt 289 and put in a 351w. The car is a 64 Falcon Conv with a toploader.

Can I use my old flywheel and clutch?

The Ansen cast steel scattershield I will be using has dual bolt patterns for the starter.

Thanks in advance.

The 5 bolt uses the 157 tooth flywheel, so if you use the Ansen bellhousing, just use the bolt pattern that will position the starter accordingly.

5 Bolt 289 to 351w swap question...

Thanks F15Falcon. My only issue now is bolting up the trans to the bell. The trans is a narrow, early toploader. The Ansen has the bosses cast into it for the narrow pattern, but not drilled. I have machine shop access and can drill and tap the holes, but I have not been able to find a dimensioned drawing of the bolt holes. My options at this point seem to be either "wing it and drill the holes where I think they should go" or rebuild the toploader (again) using the later gear box with the wider pattern...

The 351w is a 6 bolt housing so does your bell still do that as well?

Why'd you ditch the 5-bolt? More power?

In the car right now is a five bolt cast steel scattershield made by Wedge Co. It is exactly the same as an original COBRA bell, but without the COBRA script cast into it. All other casting marks are the same.

I am going to use my cast steel Ansen scattershield, which is a six bolt model with the holes drilled and tapped for the wide, later toploader bolt pattern.

The issue to me is whether to drill and tap the existing bosses on the Ansen to be able to bolt up my narrow toploader, or rebuild the toploader with my later wider case. I'm leaning towards machining the bell.

King- The 289 in the car is pretty tired at this point and I got a great deal on the 351. I've got pretty much everything I need to make it go together at this point.

I would imagine that the only reason that Ford came up with the larger case would be for increased mounting strength, although they used the same narrow case behind the 390 big block. I don't know if that would be a problem or not with your 351w.

One thing to look at with your present toploader is the output shaft. Does it have 25 splines or 28 splines? I certainly wouldn't consider using the early 25 spline model due to strenth considerations (although it would fit if you use the proper yoke.)

If you didn't live so darn far away I would offer you the parts to do the job right. . . . . (Shipping= )

I agree about 25-spline output shaft... I broke one, and it wasn´t fun...

Have you made sure your bellhousing has enough meat for threads in the locations where you would machine for the narrow trans pattern? You might have to convert the trans case.

The trans has a 28 spline output shaft originally from a 66 Fairlane 390. It's in great shape. Here's a pic from when I cleaned it up and shot some paint on it.

Here's a picture of the inside of the Ansen. It looks like the bosses line up to where I would drill and tap. I have a later, wider case (from the Fairlane) but I would prefer to drill and tap the bell vs. changing the guts to the later case... Interestingly, whoever originally drilled the holes for the inspection cover drilled one too far.
