1988 5.0 + alternator

I am just wondering what everyone has done as far as alternator swaps for small block 5.0 engines. I am still running the stock 75 amp alt, and have went through a couple so far and am finally going to upgrade. Here are a few options.

1. 140 amp alt.
2. Get adapter for GM alternator (seem easier to get a hold a variety of alternators from GM's)

I am planning on running a 16 volt setup in my car as well for stereo comps, and was just wondering what people think of external regulators. Worth the price? Where can I get one? This 16 volts may just come in the form or batteries, so the alternator might not even be hooked up to charge them. They will just be independant off of their own charger.

What kind of swaps have you guys done and what do you think the best route is if you could do it all over again?

Thanks for the input...

Shawn

I got my 130 amp unit from the wrecking yard off of a 95' Mustang, used info on the net to wire it up and have been very pleased but I'm not heavy into stereo competition so I don't know if this will suit you personally.

Go to pa-performance.com They have alternators that put out up to 200 amps, which will suit just about any stereo system.

I've got a 290 amp, externally regulated alternator on my 64 Galaxie. it's a bad mofo. The regulator is a transpo 911-02R with an adjustment knob that I can use to turn the voltage up if needed. The alternator is basically a large case 2G style ford, marketed by HEHR Powerline originally. With the car running 2k rpm I can make it lug down just by playing with the regulator knob.
