T5 problem

My T5 has no reverse. It doesn't grind when I try to put it into reverse it just won't go into gear. It is an intermitent problem. This is the third time it has happened. Before when it has happened after driving it for a few days it has healed itself and will work just fine for a while. Any ideas on what is wrong with it?

T5 problem

Do you go into a synchronized geart first? I go into 5th first and then straight down into reverse.

T5 problem

Pen, BLK has it right. Reverse sometimes will not line up. So, what I do is go to neutral, clutch out, then in, bump it up to 5th, then down to reverse. Works every time. I don't really think anything is wrong, just operator education required. It was SOP with my dad's '68 4X4 with 4 speed. It never would go into reverse.

One other issue: if you have a non-factory shifter, sometimes the adjustment for the stops is a little "off"...a quarter turn one way or the other can make a lot of difference.

The one you don't want to hear. If the transmission doesn't have an aftermarket shifter, it doesn't take too many times for a "Gorilla arm", speed shifting session to bend the shift forks.

Most likely, the two above messages are on the mark. Just for grins, you may want to drain and replace the transmission fluid...it takes DexIII ATF (about 2 1/2 - 3 quarts). Most guys never change it. Read the article on the "Tech" pages...lots of good info there.
