302 questions

Hi all great site
My son and I pulled the 302 and c-4 from my kid 64 fairlane. We pulled it down to a short block. heres what we found out.
It appears to be a recent rebuild everything is pretty clean and cross hatches are still in the bore with no lip at the top.

78 302 block .040 over and the piston are a cast flat top w/4 valve reliefs. sitting .045 in the hole. The endplay is .020.
Heads casting# say 302 and below that says 69. the date code is D00E. These have the heart shape combustion chambers. Can anyone tell me what year the heads are and what the CR would be with this setup.

Were looking at adding a edelbrock intake and either a Holley or e-brock carb. Now for the cam anyone have experance with the Lunati Voodoo or what do you recomend. I was looking about 260 dur.
The C-4 shiftd ok but when I find out what year it is I'll put a trans pac kit in it and keep the 3.00 gears.

Im new to the ford scene and was wondering WTF was ford thinking with those tiny exhaust ports

A couple things concern me here..... .045" is how far the piston is in the hole?? And what endplay is .020" ???? It would appear that you have a 302 2 barrel head on the engine. We can get you close on what compression may be ,but some blueprinting to get more specs will help to get it exact. What piston part # do you have in the engine??? Tim.

Look on the trans servo or tailshaft bolts for a tag. That tag will tell you everything abou the trans. Heads are 1970 D00E= D 70s 0=1970. HJeads are weak links. If you still have them off, port out the exhaust side. Bigger valves if you have the $$$$. Cam is good. Just make sure the exhaust works with it. Carb 600 is the biggest I'd go with Ford linkage on it, electric choke. Might want to check the amp number stamped on your alt. Most early Fords are low amps. 70amp+ is the real ticket.

Ok ....so you have an older piston made by Badger Piston. It is a 4 valve relief cast flat top piston with a valve notch volume of approx -6cc. Your cylinder head has a "As cast" volume of 58.2 cc,it may have been cut before. It will have to be cc'ed to know the exact volume. But.....doing all the math ....with you using a .041" head gasket....and the piston .045" in the hole....you will have approx. 8.6:1 compression. Double check how far the piston is down in the hole from the deck...not including gasket... .045" seems high unless it is a 73-76 8.229 deck block. I think this will be a great combo with a Performer intake and 500 holley or equivalent. As far as a cam I like to run a COMP #31-218-2 in all the combos like this one we do in the shop. It specs out as follows:.456/.456 218/218@.050 268 advertised on a 110 lsa. It works from idle to 5500 just like the Performer intake. This will make a nice 87 octane pump gas cruiser with low maintainance. Will work nice with a stock converter/3.00 gear set up. Tim.

Thanks Tim
This car is for my 15yr old son and your setup sounds like the ticket. My neighbor offered me a couple 351 motors with a roler cam but I didnt want him to have too much motor on the the street.
I figured this was a cheap rebuild when I saw the steel freese plugs. I get some machining for free from him would you sugest anything to be done on the heads? Decking to bump up the CR? I can do some porting work myself to open it up a bit.
Next I need to fab a exhaust I was thinking of a 2 1/4" into a 3" but I have a couple 40 series flowmasters 2 !/2" sitting in the garage I took off my 64 mopar due to they are too loud on a 440 w/ headers.
Thanks again. Chris

While I had the heads off I would give them a shave to get to at least 9:1. You take about 3 cc's out and youll have it. That should be about .020",so the intake should still fit fine. I would also do a lil material removal in the exhaust as well. As far as exhaust I feel 2 1/4" all the way out will work great and keep the sound down with those mufflers you have. 3" will create a loss of torque and will be a tight fit. I realize they are 2 1/2" mufflers but they can be made to work since you have em. This combo should run great in that Fairlane. No reason it should not run low 14's at the strip. I feel thats great for a first hot rod. Tim.

I personally would take .010" off EACH side and put er on. That would be optimum. Tim.
