launching rpm/technique????

I have a question for all u other drag racers. Ive always assumed that the higher rpm u launch at the faster you will go considering u are keeping traction. For instance, if you have a car that hooks when launched at 3500rpm would it be able to go faster if launched at say 2200. i always see people launching as high as traction let them.(atleast in stick shift cars dont know about auto). to make it simple you hook at a higher rpm does it make since to go lower. its a debate me and my friends have. let the disscusion begin.

launching rpm/technique????

In my experience running stick cars, the higher the launch, the quicker the run.(with traction) Even a little bit of tire spin is okay if you don't blow the tires off. With my last stick car, I was launching 6000rpm. My buddy with 283 Nova launches at 6800rpm.

launching rpm/technique????

when i ran the stick in my bracket car i would launch on the limiter 6800 rpm. no tire spin and it worked well for consistancy. only time i would drop the launch rpm was when i was red lighting usually 500 rpm. can't tell if it made a differance in et. if it did it would be less than .01.

What about in an auto? would ever help to drop the revs for a faster et. anyone have any input?

launching rpm/technique????

auto cars can be very different. even from each other. leaving higher means the car moves sooner (because all play is removed from the suspension &amp; drivetrain), but may not run faster. it may need the chassis to be shocked more to plant the tires. a car with a transbrake may run faster when footbraked. a friend of mine had a record-holding super stocker which left with the wheels 2 feet in the air. powerglide, about 6000 stall, no transbrake; left about 2800 rpm.
remember that auto converters multiply torque about 2-2.5 times. stick will have a slower 60 ft and charge at the top end. auto makes and applies power at the starting end and converter slips at the top.

When I dorve a dragster at a drag racing school, they told us we would go faster by leaving off idle instad of footbraking the car. The cars had powergrides in them. When I drove it the car was only at about half throttle (they were capable of 8 seconds in the quarter but we were doing low 11's). When the cars did 8 second passes they used a transbrake. I am pretty new to racing so I am unsure why a car with an auto would go slower launching at a lower rpm but I know it worked.

Depends on the cam, converter, etc. I get a better 60' launching at 2000~2200 rather than anything higher. If you get too deep into the torque curve of the engine, you'll use up the pulling power. Foot brake auto will also be different than trans brake auto, mostly because you can't get near flash or true stall with your foot on the brake. They way you find out where you need to launch your particular combination is to make a lot of passes and read the time slips. I use an indicator light triggered off the ignition system RPM switch to stage at the same RPM each launch.

Leave off idle anf flash the converter.My brother car has 1.45 60ft with flash the converter
