Help me set up a 408w

67 Falcon 351w, C4 with 3500 stall

Well I have reeled in my desire to exceed 500 hp with my new 408 since money is tight.
Now I would like to keep the hp between 400 and 450.
Please suggest a combo that would achieve this using aluminum heads, pump gas, and an rpm limit of 5800.

What intake?

Carb?

Heads?

Headers? Primary size?

Hydraulic Cam? Lift, duration?

Will “I-beam” rods and a cast crank be ok?

Remember money is a little tight for this project.
Thanks.

With the 5800 RPM "wall" you're going to have to really work to get 400 HP, IMO.

AFR185's would be the best bet on a stock crank/rod 351w. They will put up with quite a bit of abuse. The stock rods aren't that great, but they'll work. Cam should be in the 250-ish duration neighborhood, probably about a .600 lift give or take, and a good 850 carb will get you where you need to be. A victor Jr intake would fit the bill nicely as well.

With good heads, 400 HP isn't hard to accomplish...even with teh stock crank/rods. You're going to want around 10.5 compression, so flat tops should work fine (and they're cheaper!)

You didn't say what usage you were planning, but I assume street. How I would build a 408w with a max RPM of 5800:

Intake: Vic Jr. or RPM/Stealth. Your max RPM of 5800 will fit between the range of the available manifolds. An RPM or a Stealth would peak at 5500 or so in this big an engine, and might lead to dissappointment. The Vic is a little on the high side, but is probably a better match to achieve your RPM's.

Carb: Reworked 750 Holley

Heads: AFR's aare the best for sure. 185's best for this build, 205's would work well too if you have the $$$$. You could substitute big valve Vic Jr too which would save a couple of $.

Headers: Full, 1 3/4"

Cam: Something around 240-245 duration.

Rods and Crank: I Beams will be fine as will a cast crank at that RPM. Make sure that any rod you choose has a good quality set of rod bolts installed. Cast crank will still be stronger than the stock block.

Pistons: Somewhere around 10:1 would work well with available gas. Keep it under 10.5:1 or you might have trouble.

This engine would be capable of 400hp or more.

Help me set up a 408w

Are you guys thinking for a 408 or 351?
The reason I ask is because of the 185 heads.
Sorry if I confused everyone but I am planning on building a 408. It is currently a 351.
If the 185 heads will work on the 408 then I will save some cash over the 205's.

It will be a street used motor with the occasional 1/4 mile blast at the track.

205's would work well too, but I figured that with your 5800 limit and low budget you would like the 185's better. If this is a "step" build and you are going to build it stonger in the short term future, then go 205's. If you are not sure you will get into it soon, and really are in a $ pinch, go with the 185's now and spend you $ elsewhere, such as the suspension. You can always sell the 185's down the road. . . . .

I added more info on my first post of this thread.

Help me set up a 408w

My specs are:

Block:
351W block bored .030, fully machined, align honed etc. Eagle Stroker Steel Crankshaft (4in Stroke), Eagle I Beam Rods (6.200) and Keith Black D-Cup Pistons (10:1 Compression Ratio)

Heads:
PBM Performance Strike Force Aluminum Heads (the engine builder did some machine work), they have 2.055 Intake valves and 1.60 Exhaust. 210cc intake runners and 60cc chambers. On the Flow Bench, they flow 265 on Intake, 175 Exhaust @700 lift.

Cam specs:
PBM Performance 351W Hydraulic, RPM range of 2,200 to 5,600. Numbers are 224/234 @.050 Dur. With advanced duration at 290/300. Valve lift is .496/.520 with 110 Lobe sep.

Intake:
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. Holley 750 Double Pumper with twin Holley HP 125 fuel pumps (Dual Tanks)

Exhaust:
Stan’s Headers, Tri-Y 1 5/8” primaries into 3” collectors, 2 ½ inch duals out the side with 2 Flowmaster 40 series mufflers.

Transmission:
C-6 with extra high friction clutch packs, B&M Shift Kit, B&M Supercooler, BTE 3,500 RPM Stall Speed Torque Converter.

Other: Dual Flex-a-Lite Electric Fans, MSD Pro Billet Distributor, MSD Blaster Coil, MSD 6AL Ignition Box.
140-Amp Alternator, Optima Red Top Battery.

Tires & Gears:
39.5 inch TSL Super Swampers. 4.56 gears.

Although it's in an F-350 weighing 5,800 lbs, it has over 500 HP and 500 ft lbs of Torque so it gets out of it's own way. There's not much that pulls away from me on the street or on the mud bog track. Will run at Englishtown soon on street night. I expect high 13's or low 14's. Let me know if you have other questions. The set up is not fully broken in yet but it idles well, is reliable and sounds wicked!!!

Hmmm....that's a pretty mild combo to be making 500hp unless your on some spray....more like 350 would be my guess. Let us know what she runs in the 1/4.

Help me set up a 408w

Are you talking Rear wheel hp or at the crank? I'm talking at the motor, I have the dyno slip from the engine builder. (507 HP and 497 tq) I haven't run it on a chassis dyno yet, with the big tires, transfer case etc. the parasitic loss should be ugly, but it's at least 400 to 425 at the wheels.

69 block. Vic jr heads, pro formed 750 1 5/8 cheap headers, perf rpm intake, 10.25-1 compression, mild custom FTI hyd roller cam. Hit the 519 hp at 5700 rpm. Still had it at 6300 when we quit pulling it. (just shows how choked off it is with the dual plane, small carb and small headers). 532 ft/lbs torque @4500.
