Cam, intake and carb for 71 302
I am goin to put my 302 in my 71 coupe. I am eventually putting a strong cleveland in it. Right now the moter is bone stock as far as i know. I dont want to completly tear it down and rebuild it, but i want to pick up some power.
T-5 tranny, goin to be 2.5" dual exhaust with Hooker comp headers, completly street car.
What would be a good cam. I want decent power, but the only things i want to replace are intake cam and exhaust. I want to keep the cost as low as possible.
What about intake and carb? Could it be possible to get a carb that would be big enough for a 400HP Cleveland? If not what is a cheaper but good carb?
Is there anything that i am missing replacing that would cheaply give me power? Thanks

Cam, intake and carb for 71 302
A carb that works well on a mild 302 will not be enough for a hot Cleveland. 600 cfm Edelbrock would be my recommendation for the 302. Bolt it on, set the idle speed and mixture, and you're set.
There are lots of low-priced flat tappet cams for 302s, around .470 to .490" lift, that will do the job for you.
cheers

Cam, intake and carb for 71 302
Intake cam and carb are a good start. You might look at the Edelbrock power packages. They have a nice prematched setup. Look at the Performer intake and cam for a good torque setup.
Consider calling the Comp Cams cam helpline and get their recommendation.
How do you use the car? Just cruising? Daily driver?
You might need to change valve springs depending on cam choice although it is a good idea anyway regardless of whick cam you choose.

I run the edelbrock torker cam which is ground and available from federul mogul-Speed Pro.472-496 lift 290-300 dur.that and headers,600 carb of your choice, stealth intake= good mid range-top end power and good mpg.Low grunt is good with a good idle too.

Tony, did you mean 204/214? I think you did and that would be my pick. WIth a dual plane intake on the 302 you could get away with a 750 vacuum secondary carb (like a 3310 Holley) but you'll need to tune it to lean it out some. A 750 vs ccarb is plenty for a 400 hp C. Or pick up a good used Edelbrock 600 for now, sell it later or keep for a spare.

Cam, intake and carb for 71 302
Cruiser car for fun. Racing around on a friday night, no drag racing except maybe against a friend. Does summit have the edlebrock power package?
I have the stock distributer and wires, will that be a problem. I would like to get away without replacing them if possible.
So a Edlebrock Performer Mainifold, Edlebrock Performer 600 carb, and something like a torker cam?
What would that spin to? Could the engine saftly spin to 6000? It wouldnt be on a strip or anything but having some fun everyonce in a while.

Cam, intake and carb for 71 302
Would it be a big mistake to go with a Holley 600? They have some pretty decent deals on Summit but not with Edlebrock carbs. I know next to nothing about tuning carbs.

Cam, intake and carb for 71 302
On summit i found a Intake carb combo, Edlebrock performer dual plane intake, Edlebrock 600 carb, plus gaskets and air cleaner. All for just under $400. Is that pretty much what i would be looking for?
For a cam i found a Edlebrock Torker plus, duration at .050 214/224 and lift .472/.496. I think that duration is a little more then was suggested. Would that be too big?
Sorry, i am really new at this, thanks for all the help.

The cam is not as big as it sounds trust me, I would move up from the wee performer to a stealth or RPM , you want a taller dual plane.I got by for years with stock rail rockers too though drag racing with unknown springs to 7000+rpm however edelbrock don't like that .Others here have done worse,I am now going to screw in studs and the Torker/RPM spring ,retainor kit as its a great deal and the heads are off.The dual pattern torker cam makes great use of the poor ex ports in stock heads.
