cylinder head advice
My plans for my high compression aspirated 408 build are coming together slowly but surely. I have decided to go for the AFR225 (saving hard), my problem is that I would like to make a cylinder head upgrade to my 302 that is still going okay until I piece together the 408, still running cast iron 302b heads with home-ported job, not flowed, oversized valves (chebby) etc. My problem is that the 408 will still take a while and the 302 is still running and I know it could go much better with the head upgrade but I just want to invest in one set that would be compatable for both set-ups.....would the 225's be too big for the 302 coz I was thinking that when I eventually get the 408 shortblock together I could just swap off the 225's from the 302....302 is 40" over, pop-up pistons (not sure of comp ratio but only runs 102.6 octane), cam is mild, not sure of exact specs, victor jr & 720 holley....Thanx in advance....ROBBIE.

Yes, the 225's will be too big for your mildy cammed 308. I know some might not believe I just said that (long story).
They will be able to bolt onto your 302 with the right head bolt spacers. The motor will even run. Just won't make good power. With the 408 you'll be very happy with them.

Thanx 289nate....so even if I cammed her up a bit more which should'nt be much of a hassle seeing that the heads will be off, I just don,t wanna invest too much in the 308 whereas the $$ could have gone towards the 408 build....know what i mean? I basically wanna add something to the 308 that I could also use later with the 408...I know I'm asking a lot.

You have way too much head. if you had the 205's you could get away with them

So if I opt for the AFR205 for the 308 and when I eventually get the 408 going it might be too little head again....DAMN!!!

205 should work for the 408 too, with a nice power curve, and great torque. Also, with any of these heads you need to check piston to valve clearance, otherwise they're bolt ins. Another option would be to pick up the street 205's, bolt them on the 302, then when the 408 is done, have them CnC ported to the race specs, and bam, a head for both. You'll spend a bit more money this way, but you get what you're wanting, and you're spending a LOT less than two sets of heads.
Cris
By the way, people are making over 550hp out of a pump gas 427ci Windsor, with the 205's. I doubt you'll out motor those heads with cubic inches =).

It's all in the combination and how you want it to perform.
I don't consider the 205s "too little" for my application.

Rob, I think it would help if you were to explain your goals for the 408. Then people might have a better idea what to recommend.
I would think the valve events (cam), exhaust system, intake, carb, etc. would have to be right on the money for the 205's to work well on a 302. Do you really want to go to all that trouble on the 302? I'd say just save the good heads for the 408.
I really like what I've read about mstngjoe's 408 in progress. Cast crank, solid flat tappet cam and shooting for 600hp on motor (I think even pump gas). I'd think you'll make your goal with Buddy Rawls in your corner. Yes, for YOUR goals and YOUR combo the 205 will be enough.

The bigger cam and larger valves of the 225 will most likely cause piston to valve clearance issues. May not even be workable with the small cam. Doubt you want to put new pistons in the 302.
