hard starting when hot

I have a 1973 mustang grande with a 351 cleveland in it.
When it get hot and I shut it off and try to restart it it turn over very slow and barely starts it sounds like the battry is almost dead!!! any ideas?[img]/forums/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif[/img][img]/forums/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif[/img]

Heat kills ,batterys,starters,and wiring over time.
Sounds like the electrical system is in need of some upgrading.
Start with a good battery like a optima or a equivilant sprial cell battery. Put some new battery cables like 2 gauge or better. And finally if you have the bucks get a decent gear reduction starter. Aside from aftermarket companies like CSR and Powermaster, Im not sure who makes one for the clevland. I would THINK that its the same ford starter as any ol Windsor with a ford tranny , but im not sure.
All brand new your looking at about 500 for everything. Unless you get on ebay and get some good deals.

Do you run headers? This could just be heat soak in the starter. Too much initial timing will do the same thing when hot.

That's what happens to Ford starters when they get old. You can try pulling the starter and cleaning the starter face and the block, cleaning all the cable connections, etc. If it still does it replace the starter. If you run headers a new "high buck, hight torque" Powermaster is about $160 from Summit.

If it starts fine cold then I would say its heat soak on the starter. A commen prob if your running headers. Maybe a mini starter or an insulator cover for your starter.

Before you start changing everything, make sure you have a good clean/solid ground strap from the block to chassis.

Mine was bad and gave the exact results you are describing. Replaced the strap and instant starts when hot!
