trying to delete PS, but alt pulley doesn\'t line up w/ water pump pulley
The alt pulley is farther ahead than the water pump pulley. Can I space out the water pump pulley so it will line up w/ the alt pulley?
This is on a 68 cougar w/ V-belts. I'm trying to delete PS, but that is the acessory that lines w/ the water pump.
thanks
Austin

Welcome to my nightmare. Apparently, ford made more than one triangle bracket. One that has a kick out toward the front. The other is flat.
Be back later. Got a chance at a free dinner.
Sorry, Rick

Would you be able to fabricate one? I have that bracket you need on my car. Maybe I could make a cardboard template of mine and make measurements if you can't find one.

I had the same problem with mine. I ended up cutting an aluminum spacer(think it was about 1/4 thick) and notching out 4 elongated holes for the waterpump pulley bolts to go thru. Make sure the center guide coming from the water pump is at least sticking out 1/8" or more to keep the pulley centered. Mine lined up perfectly then. Good luck!!

Actually I've put washer behind the WP pulley to space it were I wanted it because I couldn't find the combo I needed. Ford did a good one here, one of their better ideas. They made it so if you had manual steering the Alt light would come on if the WP belt broke. That way it the engine didn't overheat. On PS setups it drives the PS so you loose PS when the belt breaks telling you that the belt is gone.

Ok, I think I'm going to go w/ spacing out the water pump pulley. I think I should be able to use one of those fan spacers. I think the shortest they make them is 1", but I should be able to cut one down on the pump side. I will let everyone know how it goes.
thanks

I ended up making my own bracket for the alternator. It ended up being flat, with no bends off the waterpump mounting screws, then the pulley's lined up correct with the back pulley. I looked for some pictures of it, but I don't have any saved. I'll snap some when I get to the shop today. It took a whole 1/2 hour to fab up.

I had the opposite problem after removing the A/C and PS, I had ASP make a custom underdrive crank puller before I realized I had an alternator alignment problem. I made spacers out of pipe to space the alternator out.
Probably should just make a new alternator braket.

None of my pulleys lined up. Here is my old setup. Notice the spacer on water pump and all thread for alternator bolt.

Sorry it took so long getting back. I had a great blackened rib eye that my son's company paid for.
Anyway, I'm not trying to delete my PS system, I'm trying to put together a single groove system - single crankshaft pulley groove, single groove waterpump and of course a single groove alternator. I've found that Ford made at least two triangle brackets that bolt on the waterpump. One kicks out toward the radiator about an inch and a half. This is for cars with two groove power steering systems. The other is much more flat and is used with cars that have no PS or AC.
That's what you need, the flatter of the two triangle brackets. It's the bracket that wdflarity shows in his picture. I wouldn't use washers...as spacers on your pulleys, try to buy or make one of those flat brackets.
I cut two of them out & am in the process of making something that works, but my worst fears are being realized... they look like I made them.
If you find two, send me one & I'll pay you for it. I'll do the same if I find two.
Rick
