What\'s Interchange and How To Use It

Like Gollum in Lord Of The Rings asked, "What's taters, Precious?", I understand there is a Ford Interchange Manual and has been for many years. Where does a Ford dork like me get one and how is it really used?

I struggle with part replacements and wonder what will work on what? Some of the savvy Ford guys are all dialed in on this. But seeing as I'm stuck on Fords, I guess it is time I figured this out. Any help on understanding how to proceed is much appreciated. If I have a number, say on a windshield wiper switch. How would I know what other unit would cross to what is broken on my Ford. It is probably simple, so please 'splain you gurus! Hollinger's is the book(s) used by just about every salvage yard to know part numbers what crosses over. They are several hundred dollars a copy and you can get them on CD. There are a couple cheaper ones that you see for sale by book vendors at large car shows but they aren't as complete. That's what I have, think I paid about $30 for it some years ago. Check eBay, Amazon, etc.

Hey gang, yeah I guess Hollander's is what I was asking about. But when I'm looking on Ebay or in my Galaxy Owner's Club magazine the guys spitout Ford part numbers like it's a second language. I don't think my factory repair manuals list Ford part numbers for all the various components so how would I find out this stuff? They do give the handy Rotunda tester model numbers (like we got those laying around!) Essentially how can I be as smart as these (likely) long time Ford fanatics?

The books list the Ford and industry numbers as well as the model and years that carry them.
There is a Ford part interchange book and a ford High performance interchange book. I think they are less expensive than the big one that fits all makes and models.

The only way to get the interchanges for the little stuff like wiper arms, or wiper switches, etc is the Hollander book, the high performance catalog lists only engines and their components (at least mine does) of course nothing can replace 40 years of knowledge, which is likely the case with the guys who can recite numbers from memory.
