Just hooked up my Taurus fan and derale controller...had a problem

So I just finished hooking up my taurus fan, derale controller (p/n 16749) and 75 amp relay. Checked all the wiring twice. Hit the switch and nothing. The thermostat switch to turn on the fan is adjustable and the instruction say that to make the fan come on cooler (at a lower temp) then turn the knob counter clockwise. So I turn the knob CCW and it is almost already all the way there. All the way CCW is supposed to be 150 degrees and my engine was reaching 220 and the fan would not turn on. So I kill it again and start checking stuff. I check stuff for more than an hour. Finially I turn the adjustment full clockwise. Hit the key and the fan comes on at 150 degrees. Looks like the derale instructions are backwards. CW for cooler, CCW for hotter.

Besides that it was uneventful. I have never had my truck (71 F100 w/ mild 460/C6) at 200, hit the key and see the temp drop at idle. I usually have to be moving for it to cool off. I'm very pleased. I'm going to put the same setup on my 68 cougar just to get rid of the mechanical fan.

thanks
Austin

I just installed the same Derale fan controller on my Falcon today. I'm still fidling with the adjustment to get the fan to come on at the right time. I used the new 17" 2400CFM Derale fan and you can see the engine stumble a bit from the power surge when that fan kick in.

I'm using a 200 amp 3G from PA so I don't see much of a drop when the fan kicks on. I'm using the high speed wire (yellow stripe, not orange) on the taurus fan so it really moves some air.
I do see the volts go from about 14.2 V to 14.0 when the fan is on. So there is a difference.

Gotta love a 3G/Taurus fan combo.

Now I just need to figure out how to hook up a LED to show me when the fan is on. I'm not good at electrics so I have no idea. I need a tech article to show me.

It'd be pretty easy, just run it in parallel with the fan on the relay.

Ok, I know nothing of LEDs or anything electronic. Yes, I understand putting it in parallel, but wouldn't all that amperage blow it? Do I need some sort of fuse on it?

For a pilot light I'd look for a 12v lamp in a housing at the local parts house. Some may be bulbs, some may be LED's but either way, they'd work on regular car circuits. LED's unless tied in with a resistor are not happy at 12 volts, but I'm sure there are some already out there ready for use in cars. You could check in Jegs or other catalog places too. Even ol' JC Whitney.
