460 Questions

Hey guys I just acquired a 1988 F350 with a fuel injected 460. Does anyone know if it is possible to convert this motor over to carburation if so what would i need to do. My other question would be how hard would it be to swap this motor into my 1961 galaxie with the fuel injection on it?

Thanks guys

it can be carbureted, but you'll have to change the intake and the heads.....the exhaust manifolds will be fine, as they'll bolt to the older heads, but the ports on the intake side are different.....

I wouldnt do the fuel injection swap as it is a speed density computer, and major mods will need extensive/expensive tuning. I think it should be straigt foward with the carbueretor swap with a new manifold, carb, and new fuel pump. Will it fit is another story, did this car ever come with a 460, or have the option to have it installed

As sevenlitrestang said a carbureted intake won't bolt up to the EFI heads. However, if you wanted to do it on the REAL cheap, the lower intake on that EFI 460 is almost identical to a stock dual-plane... all you'd have to do is plug the injector holes and make a simple adapter plate to adapt from the upper manifold flange bolt pattern to a Holley bolt pattern (might even be the same, for all I know). Otherwise if you want a different intake you're stuck with getting different heads as well.

Hey thanks for all the help guys. I'm going to get my hands on one of those adapter plates. I'd really rather have carburation.

Do the carb swap to the manifold. Problem with the inj 460 is no one wants to work on it yet. But it has to have some good in it, after all it pulled a lot of trucks. It's like a lot of Ford engines, takes about 20 yrs before anyone does anything with them.
