Trans Cooler Pressures

Anyone know what pressures run to a trans cooler?
Will fuel line work (150psi) or will I need to come up with Trans Cooler hose (250)?
Coolers are pressure tested to 200psi but what does a cooler line really run at??

Use ONLY transmission cooler hose ,Steel lines or braided teflon style hoses made for the purpose of transfering HOT oil under pressure.

I seriously dobut that Fuel line is rated @ 150lbs @ 200 Deg.
So the use of fuel line is asking for disaster.

It is very unlikely that your tranny lines will ever exceed 60 PSI unless you are building a race tranny... (those I don't know about with any personal knowledge)

Your average auto's tranny C-4 C-6 FMX, T350, T400 AOD Etc... At 1,200 rpm in neutral or park go about 30 PSI.
at about 2,500-3,000 I have seen 80 on a clogged filthy tranny.

I've seen nothing over that.

I got those numbers doing 2 years worth of transmission flushes so it's fairly accurate.

i got a some hose from my local heavy equipment parts dealer. it is made by gates and has a working pressure of 300 psi and a burst pressure of 1,200 psi i think. it was like $1 a ft. not bad stuff, i am currently running 3/8" on my trans and 1/2" for my engine oil. haven t had any problems, but i am switching to steel hard lines for the tranny, at least up to the front of my truck, then running hose to the radiator. but yeah don t use fuel line! carb line is only rated for like 20psi. and fuel injection line is more yes but i don t think it will take the heat and tranny fluid does funny things to certain rubbers too, trust me!

The pressure in the cooling lines is nothing, it's open to the pan on the return so no psi to speak of.......

fuel line will not hold up you need hydrolic line...it's different........

Hmmm only 30psi? thats weird .

The ford Tech Ref manual for the C4 mentions:

"The convertor pressure relief valve limits the maximum pressurethat can build up in the convertor circuit to about 90psi, no matter how high the control pressure goes.( as well see later, control pressure can go as high as 200 psi in certian conditions)"

No im not a tech by any means, dont get me wrong, but I cant understand how the cooler lines only go to 30 psi when the rest of the trans is reaching these kinds of pressure.

Any thoughts on that ?

I know nothing about the trans, but my guess for why it doesnt have pressure is that cooler lines have no little restriction, They are big, they can move a lot of fluid, and they dump right into the pan.

The tranny cooler lines at IDLE push about .75QT per minute at my best guess. It takes the average tranny about 10 to 12 minutes to push 16 QTS of tranny fluid out of the tranny with an average of 20 PSI of backpressure, that's just my estimates.

Now for your statement 71,

The main pump and torque convertor are not the items that push the tranny fluid out into the radiator and back into the pan, I don't precisely know because I've never looked but I believe the tranny lines come out comewhere near the clutche assy's, it's simply logical to remove the heat from the area that creates the most, and send it off to be cooled, from there, rather than push all that heated fluid through the tranny to somewhere else then out to the radiator...

Did that make sence?

Use steel line and hose designed for oil. Line pressures can exceed 100 psi, especially if you are stalling or flashing the converter. Temps can get pretty high as well. Some rubber swells when in contact with oil, some breaks down. I usually use hose rated for power steering systems. It's reinforced and resistant to swelling.
