High volume oil pump or stock?

I need to buy a oil pump for my 408 build..Any recommendations what kind of pump I should get?..The motor likely won't see much over 6000 rpm(mostly street) and I have a deep milodan oil pan..I know the high volume takes some hp to drive but I had one in my 306 and the thing lasted forever.... I'm not sure it was due to the pump though.

I think this was covered in many past posts......with no real consensus. At the risk of causing a flame of galactic proportions, I vote High volume (every time). But run a good (like ARP) oil pump drive shaft. Oh no........What have I done?!?!

What kind of clearances are you running on the main and rod bearings?

Too much pressure can lead to aeration of the oil....not good.

I've always used the blueprinted standard volume race pump from:

How about a standard volume/standard pressure pump that puts out 25% more volume? Sounds silly but Melling has one:

It is adjustable so if you install it "as is" and find that you have inadequate oil being delivered, you can crank it up some.

frdnut,
As mstngjoe stated I also used the blueprinted standard volume pump from precision oil pumps. The pump was high quality, and I get about 30psi hot when idling and 60-70 when at wot. The last high volume I had in a 302 of mine cause the distributor gear to wear to fast. I haven't had any problems out of this one in my 414w.

If you have large bearing clearances, like a race prepped engine, or are trying to get a little more life out of a worn engine, the high volume is needed. If you have a rebuilt engine with stock clearances you don't need the extra volume. The excess will just flow out the pressure relief, or pump up to the valve covers at extended high rpm.

I put a high volume in my Cleveland when I rebuilt it. I think I'm going to pull it and put a stock one in. The pressure is always at 70, even hot idle. If I cruise the highway above 3500 rpm, the pressure needle starts bouncing, like the pump is sucking air. The pump pushes all the oil to the top end, so I have to slow down and let the oil drain back. I have roller rockers so I should put restricter pushrods in to keep the oil in the bottom.

Now, that is a dirty trick ... ! Every time someone starts a good thread, guaranteed to bring on sectarian violence, fraternal bloodshed and inflame the hearts and minds of the multitudes for uncounted centuries - some egghead resorts to facts.

don't you just hate when someone cops out, resorts to reason, facts and authorities (Mellings has been in the oil pump "bid-ness" since the early days of NASCAR). Now what are we gonn’a fight over?

I guess there is still personal opinion. Thats always good for a few emotional rounds of Flaming messages, don’cha know?
