I need help picking my cam

I ordered the AFR 165's for my torino and I need help matching everything up

I need some advice on what cam to run. Here is what I have.

I intend to use it for: Street performance / weekend cruiser with some track runs (really wat to run my buddy w/ an '05 mustang) Want to keep low torque for the size of the car, snappy throttle, but nice high rpm pull

1969 Ford torino formal roof, 3400 + lbs
Ford 302 +.030
5cc stock type notched pistons
AFR 165cc runner, 58cc chamber heads (sweet lil heads)
Alum 1.6 roller rockers, stud 3/8 mount
Compression will be 9.2 - 9.4
Stock converter (as of now)
3:73 gears
long tube headers
600 cfm edelbrock carb
Edelbrock RPM (1500 - 6500+) or Weiand Stealth (idle to 6000rpm) manifold
hydraulic flat tappet lifters / cam

OK...now the cams I have been looking at have been all over the board.

Comps 270H (so far my best choice)
Operating Range: 1800-5800 RPM
Duration Advertised: 270° Intake / 270° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 224° Intake / 224° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.6 Rockers: .500'' Intake / .500'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 110°

Edelbrocks Performer RPM's
Operating Range 1500-6500 RPM
Duration Advertised 290° Intake/300° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' 224° Intake/234° Exhaust
Lift @ Valve .496'' Intake/.520'' Exhaust
Lift @ Cam .310'' Intake/.325'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle 112°
Intake Centerline 107°
Intake Timing @ .050" Open 5° BTDC
Close 39° ABDC
Exhaust Timing @ .050" Open 54° BBDC
Close 0° ATDC

or
Comps
Xtreme Energy XE262H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft
Lift: .493''/.500''
Duration: 262°/270°
RPM Range: 1300-5600

I dont run anything that will require vaccume, so lopey idle to me is good.
But I have no idea on how much duration vs lift for the size or car to get good low end torque and hi rpm HP. Any advice would be well advised,

Thanks,

The Edelbrock cams are a joke. The Comp xe 262 is a very GOOD choice. If you have some lower rear end gears, go up to the xe268. When I tested a Comp with an Edelbrock, with near 050 numbers, the Comp made 39 MORE HP. JOE SHERMAN RACING

Damn, I always knew Comps were pretty good, but I didn't realize that Edelbrocks sucked that bad!

I agree with you on the XE262, but I disagree with you on edelbrock being "a joke" I've had good luck in quality with them, and they seem to make very decent power numbers. I'v used about 3 of their cams wth power matched heads and intakes and they have all been really strong.
Plus one cam will work on a combo, then just swapping out another in terms of doing a battle of the cams, and it works terribly with "that" combo. Edelbrock does good with taking out the guesswork in their power combos, which works for a lot of people who just want to relaible proven combo. I dunno just my 2 cents...why do you think they are a joke?

I dont like the Edelbrock cams, very old technology, lots of adv duration, very little @ .050, and the wide LSA just to make it idle

Basically thats 60's technology IMO

The Comp Cams 270H cam is exactly what I have. I love the way it idles at 800rpms......it sounds sick(in a good way.......lol) I have a video clip coming soon to Youtube. The 270H has alot of torque to boot.

The 270H is a decent camshaft that's been around for a while. It's a more advanced design than the Edelbrock, but not as advanced as the Xtreme Energy line. The Edelbrock is a 'generic' piece that E-bok buys super cheap and re-sells under their name. You can often find the exact same grinds under the Summit, SSI, PAW, and other generic names. VERY old tech.... but will still work 'ok' when used with matching components. (better than a totally mismatched camshaft, anyway)

Use the XE262 if you are keeping the stock converter, or maybe the XE268 if stepping up to a looser aftermarket unit and possibly some steeper gears. Personally, I think the XE262 will be perfect.... especially with the weight of that car.

BIGJOE knows what he's talking about. He's forgotten more than anybody here has ever learned. He's one to listen to. We are VERY fortunate to have him here! He won the very first Engine Master's challenge, and is a legend!

Good Luck!

Awesome, thank you guys! BIGJOE, I didnt mean to undermind you...im just a new guy trying to figure out a new combo. I didn't realize the experience I was talking to.
Looks like I wasn't too far off in my selection.

Edelbrock's out

Looks like the XE262H or 268 is the cam of choice. I know I will be stepping up the gears soon to 3:73's but no lower, i want to be able to do freeway cruising.

I think the 262H is best for my application at this time.

I'd like to hear it in action nd hear the idle if anyone knows where a vid is.... (this forum is like a magic ball, figured I'd try)

Thanks all again for your help!
