I'm in the process of building up my '66 coupe. I have already replaced the wiring harness with a Painless unit. It will be getting a new heart soon and with the motor I will be putting all new gauges in keep close eye on it. Question is: Eletrical. or mechanical? Thanks for your time.

Hey there, mechanical is more accurate and more reliable.(Except for the Tach) But they are a pain to route the plumbing necessary for the oil and water. Plus you need to decide how many gauges? Tach,Water temp, oil pressure, and volts are the common ones. Then theres oil temp, trans temp, and vacuum to name a few.
I personally went with mech water temp, oil and vacuum. and yes they were a pain. I just wanted the mechanical ones.

Ever since I had a mechanical oil pressure gauge leak oil all over the inside of my car I refuse to run engine fluids into the passenger compartment. It wasn't the hose it was the meter it's self that leaked.

I was going to go with Auto Meter and am leaning towards mechanical. As far as leaks, I would hope Auto Meter would not leak an I will be using steel braided line. Thanks for the time.

Autometer, mechanical. I've used brand name oil pressure gauges for years (always use 1/8 copper and ditch the nylon) and never had one leak.

I would say that if electrical gagues were prone to failure, they wouldn't be used in millions of production cars. That said, in a custom app where wiring problems can occur, you can see bad values pretty easy.

I have mechanical oil pressure, water temp, speedo, but electrical tach, fuel, O2, and trans temp gauges

I have a mechanical voltmeter too.

All autometer Ultra-lites. I love them.

I'm going with Stewart Warner gauges........oil, water temp, voltage gauges for $199.00

They come with a 2 warranty and made in the USA. Most of your other gauge are made ?????
