Drum brakes

I have a drum brake dilema . I have two differant 9 inch axles with differant size ends that center the axles on the drums. I would like to use the large 11 inch drums I have with the smaller size axle ends. My question is . Is there a bushing to make this work or does it not matter that the drum does not fit tight ? Also does the axle stick out further on the larger drums than the smaller ones and does that make a differance. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks,Jim.

Jim,if the bolt circle is the same you should be ok.The only different offset I have seen is for the big bearing rear end.I ran into this with my Comet when I switched to 35 spline big bearing MW axles.I used my old brakes and the drum does not seat against the backing plate but has not caused any problems in 4 years. I found out what I was looking for. The register diameter of the axles I have are differant sizes. Do they make a bushing or ring to use the small register diameter axle with a large diameter drum ?

I've never seen one. What would hold it in place? You could take the axle to a machne shop and have the end welded up and then machined down to fit the large diameter drum. For that matter you could go to the wrecking yard and get the correct axle and be done with it.

Do you think it would matter much ? Would the studs keep the drum centered enough ?

you could always have someone machine you up an adapter ring.

Jim;give me a shout,805-987-6718.I may have missunderstood your question.I thought you meant the hole in the backing plate.I think MW makes the adaptor for the drum to axle register.I will be gone tomorrow to the Ford show at Knotts Berry Farm, but you can call next week if you want,I'm retired so I should be home.
