Can u change 5th gear?

Ive talked to two transmission shops so far. They both have opposite oppinions on if or if not you can change 5th gear ratio in a T5 tranny. One says ya but it wont do any good because the cluster gears yadda yadda, the other says of course you can. Ive noticed about 5 different 5th gear sets you can buy so I would imagine it could be done. Any one know?

Who did you ask? Was it one of the shops that have contributed features to the Tech Dept page?

yes it was Bruce of Modern Driveline at your link above that said I could do it. I just am getting skiddish because Ive called many places and they all say call Valley Gear. So I did and that guy laughed and said it would never work because bla bla bla. But it makes me wonder

The only issue "I think" (unsubstantiated opinion)...which could affect whether you can change the OD gear, would be 'if' you had to change the cluster or some other auxiliary gear, to mate with the replacement you intend to install.

Th point I was making about the cases being essentially the same, except for WC vs. Non-WC means that when they rebuild a T-5 or upgrade a T-5, they put everything back in the same cases. So, in my flawed logic - What is keeping you from swapping from a .63 OD to a .8x?

I guess the point is to decide who to believe. Or , call some more shops and get a few more opinions. At some point you either have to fish or cut bait.

Heck, worse comes to worse - see if someone wants to swap transmissions with you?

You can buy G Force kits for the T5 that have different OD's available. I think they range from .58 to .8ish. Plenty of people are using these kits.

Who is Valley Gear? My T5z has a .63 overdrive compared to the normal .68. Have heard lots of good things about Bruce at Modern Driveline with regards to the T5. I would trust him.

If Bruce says yes, its yes, he is very sharp. I wouldnt hesitate to use him. I have worked with him before and he knows these and TKOs cold

Last time I was "into" a T5, I remember taking a good look at the OD gears. I do believe you can swap the OD gears....or at least that's what appeared to be the case. I remember looking at it because I wanted to get rid of the SVO's .8-something OD in favor of the .73 or .68 OD with the 4.10 rear gears. I just happened to have a junk '84 T5 (from a Mustang 5.0) but never tried swapping the OD gears. Looks like they'll interchange to me.

But beware that there were more variances in gears than you can shake a stick at. Some of the OD gears look identical...but in fact are a different pitch, different thicknesses, etc.
