Looking at a 78 302 for my Model A project. Anything different or not so good about this year engine?

Thanks

Stock, it's about as anemic as they get. But if you are tearing it down for a re-build, I see nothing wrong with it, especially if you are going with aftermarket heads and some other goodies.

Can be good if built right. It's all about the combination... Is it standard or been punched out already. I pretty much have the same block (1980), but was very speciffic about how I wanted to drive the car which dictated what cam and other components to add.

What do you plan on using this in. Is that a Torino on your page.

Yep, It's a 68 Torino GT. The pic didn't come out to well. The 302 is going to go in my Model A Tudor that I'm restoring.

In it's stock form should be more than enough motor to move that old coach along. The cars don't weigh too much.

For performance, the 74-78 302 had a taller deck for less compression(pollution crap) than the earlier or later blocks. You can make it run great since I am running a '74 block also. If you are going to do some wheel stands, I would get a different block. It would be easier. A Model A "wheel stander" Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Actually the taller deck stopped in 1976..The 77-78 motors went back to the 8.206 deck hieght and got flat top pistons that were pretty much zero decked..To kill the compression for smog purposes they went to a gigantic combustion chamber in the heads...The nice thing is you can chuck the heads and bolt on some earlier stuff and get a very nice boost in compression..Early 289 heads put them at about 10.5 while later later 69-74 351 heads put them at about 10:1 with bigger valves to boot...My brother has one of these combinations.Great low buck engine.
