Proper pushrod length?

Hey all, I have an 85 mustang with a 302 that I bought from a friend and I don't think he installed the proper pushrods when he changed the cam/rocker arms. I haven't measure them yet but several of them are bent and I have an inclination he never replaced them with the proper length pushrods. I have heard/read that buying an adjustable pushrod is the easiest way, but before I buy that and stare at it like an idiot, I would like to have an idea of what to do.

Thanks, Nate

Re: Proper pushrod length?

You can buy an adjustable pushrod called a pushrod length checking tool. They are available at most speed shops for less than 15 bucks. You can use it to check the preload on you lifters and then determine the proper pushrod length. Once you find the proper length you will find several pushrod manufacturers that will make them to your specs. Just do a search for pushrods on your internet search engine. Buying adjustable pushrods for each valve would be fairly expensive and a real hassle to keep them in adjusted.

I am concerned about the cylinders that have the bent pushrods. I hope you don't have bent valves or dinged pistons on those cylinders. Do yourself a favor and document which pushrods are bent so that you can reference later if you are having problems with those cylinders. I didn't and I was sorry later that I hadn't.
