NEW! Hedman headers for early Mustangs, take a look!

I was fishing through the internet and catalogs getting ready to make another set of race headers for my '67 Cougar drag car when I stumbled across Hedmans web site, again. If I read correctly, they are making headers for 65-70 Mustang/Cougars with 289, 302, and 351W (hold on, I already know they make these headers, but only in 1 5/8" tube) and you now have a choice of 1 3/4" tube OR stepped 1 3/4" - 1 7/8" and stock/standard two-inch wide exhaust bolt pattern at the head OR three-inch! They seem a bit pricey, but it saves my a lot of work. Does anyone have any experiences with these or seen a pair??? I'm very interested in these and Summit Racing and Jegs show them for sale on their web sites. The picture of the stepped header #85008 on the Hedman site looks really neat, take a look.

Re: NEW! Hedman headers for early Mustangs, take a look!

Looking for similar headers myself. Those seem good and they have ceramic versions too (checking from summit website). However, I went through some effort to get good brakes to my car and wouldn't like to give up the power brakes... I currently have coated (stock bolt pattern) Hedman elites in my car and the workmanship is not particularly good (clearance for bolts not good causing lot of hassle in attachment, one hole welded shut, flange around #8 not straight causing sealing issue). They have served the purpose, but not particularly a first class set. Huslers are more expensive, so they may be better quality, but I don't have personal experirence to judge that.

I have previously purchased several headers from FPA for my 351C and my buddies cars and they have been very nicely made (and the coating is better looking too, whether it's functionally any better I dunno). I think I'll check with FPA if they would be interested to make similar stepped set (they have 1 3/4" wide bolt pattern Windsor set already ) which clears power brakes, as I need bigger pipes for my 408W. Hedman Huslers seem to be in similar (high) price range too, so that wouldn't make difference here.

Re: NEW! Hedman headers for early Mustangs, take a look!

What I have done in the past is to aquire a set of 351C headers that fit the car I am working on (Mustang/Cougar) and after removing the flange and appropriate amount of tubing, I graft on a 289/351W flange and tubing; depending on the price of the Cleveland headers it saves $$$, but not a lot of time as it can be labor intensive. The reason for this is because 351C's come in such a variety of tube diameters (1 3/4", 1 7/8", 2", & 2 1/8") as compared to the standard early Mustang header. Plus, by using the wide three-inch head bolt pattern, hard to get to bolts are a thing of the past (normally). These headers that I "modify" are made for the track and not necessarily for the street. I agree, if the price came down a bit, I would be far more interested. But then again, time is money.

According to the reply I got directly from Hedman, they fit both the Windsor Sr and Jr heads.

Re: NEW! Hedman headers for early Mustangs, take a look!

Hmm, that is interesting. I called hedman last year and asked why they didn't make a header JUST for a 351 windsor in a 69 70 mustang. They said that ford did not HAVE a windsor in a 69 70 mustang. I was like "what??" I explained, they disagreed. Then they said hold on, we will ask our "expert". I was like, yes, finally. Their so called "expert" said the same thing. They only have 351 CLEVELANDS in 69 and 70. He said they never had a windsor in them years. I tried to explain again, to no avail. Complete chebby morons!!

Glad to know, that after all these years that Hedman still has their heads up their...turndowns when it comes to certain particulars or car configurations. I personally would never buy a Hedman hedder after several run ins with their "tech" on why this won't fit that, etc. The best one was with the old 79 TA - they sold a hedder that was to fit a 403 in a Firebird body. The hedder didn't and their tech guy was convinced that my car didn't come with a 403, must have something else in their since the pipes didn't clear the starter. Said the starter should be on the other side. "You got the right parts on the wrong car - no refunds." $200 at the muffer shop to fix the problem. That and several sets of SBF hedders that came out of the box needing rework pretty much steered me away from them.

PS - guy here just put a set of the steps on his Mustang (small block, runs high 6s, low 7's in the 1/8 mile) and it didn't seem to pick it up much. Tuning still being done on that car, but so far not $700 worth of HP has been found.
