408 Windsor street strip
Changing from 393 to a 408 W now for 70 mach 1. I'm going with Eagle or scat 4340 crank and H beams and maybe srp's in my sportsman block. I'm using afr205 heads. Maybe with 200 shot. This is still 4 speed, 411 car.
What do you guys think about using comp cams XE 282 H roller in this with .565in intake/ .574in exhaust? This cam pulled past 6500 in my 393. The springs on my 205's are good to .600 in.
Has anyone used a front sump moroso 351 steet/strip oil pan on a 408 ?
Did it clear the 408 stroke ok?

Re: 408 Windsor street strip
That's a 302 cam. It will not perform to full potential in a 408. You may have been happy with it in your 393, but that's because you don't know what you're missing.
Just because your springs on the AFRs are good to .600 lift doesn't mean they have the correct seat pressure for the cam. You should match the springs to your cam.
Go with the Scat kit.

Re: 408 Windsor street strip
That is a baby cam for the 408 + AFRs. I would *seriously* consider a bigger solid roller. 260-ish @ 0.050" and 0.650" (yes, get new springs). It'll rev 7K and you'll never look back on the decision.

+1
Those 0.600" lift statements are totally bogus. Some cams lift the valves MUCH more quickly than others, and need stiffere springs to control the valvetrain. Hydraulic Rollers, especially the Xtreme Energy series NEED far stiffer springs than even what the factory recommends. For those, go with around 150lbs on the seat.
Good Luck!

Re: 408 Windsor street strip
I think you need more cam. I am using the xe282hr cam in my 393 (387 actually), and the power starts to fall off way before 6500, more like 5500. However I have 3 things working against me in the rpm department:
1) Tiny headers (1+5/8).
2) Stealth Intake
3) Old Windsor SR heads
Depending on your tire height, you are going to need some rpm capability at the far end of the track. A 26" tire and 125MPH you will be > 6500 rpm

Re: 408 Windsor street strip
Although the cam is on the small size, it will run just fine. Maybe upgrade when you can. But to answer your real question: Yes, I used the Moroso front sump, street strip pan on my 70 mach with the 408. The pan cleared the rotating assembly. but if I remember right, I had to dent the inside down to clear the oil pump. Not the pan itself. There is a piece of metal welded inside the pan that helps control the oil, so the oil doesn't slosh back out on acceleration. Doesn't hurt to modify that a bit so it fits. If I remember also, I had to take the small engine crossmember out and dent that a bit also. The biggest problem I had with it was, I had to order like 4 of them from Summit cause every one was bent so bad that it wouldn't even go on the motor! If I were to do it again, I think I would try a Canton or something else.

Re: 408 Windsor street strip
Thanks to everyone. Jasonn care to share your cam specs?
Also thanks for the tip on the oil pan.

Re: 408 Windsor street strip
Some people think you need a huge cam with the 408. Will they run better? Maybe, maybe not. It is all about the cam being "matched" to the motor. If you spent the money on a 408 kit, it is definately worth the money for a custom cam. Either Jay allen, Ed Curtis, Buddy Rawls. I have tried to deal with Jay, and very good cam guy, but he is very hard to deal with and recommends alot of VERY expensive options. I have heard nothing but great things about Buddy. I personally went with Ed at FTI. He is a bit on the slow side (he is very busy), but his cams are awesome. (I don't care what the guys on the SBFtech guys say). I told Ed I wanted a steet hyd cam. But told him I wanted it to run Very hard. (obviously). My cam is a VERY mild hyd roller with only around .580 lift and around 240-250 dur. For a 408, this is VERY mild. I thought i had got kind of screwed cause with this small cam, it will never hit my objective. 11's My 408 with the dual plane intake, 750 carb, 1 5/8 headers (which all the internet experts said would not work with a big 408), and this cam, in my stock mach 1 with pretty much stock suspension (caltracks) went 11.39 @ 119. So when I put this motor in the pro street car, I put a vic jr, 950hp, and 1 3/4 headers on. SO far, it went 11.08@120 in some very bad air. 10-1 comp, 3350lbs and street tires with the exhaust. (and cd player! HA) So I know it will run some 10's easy with some good air. I told Ed I wanted a solid 11sec street car, now it looks like I'll have a 10 sec street car! I love how this thing runs. I have beat the crap out of all of my buddies small block stroker cars (Chevy's AND Fords) that have these HUGE solid rollers and have valvetrain problems all the time. Again, I think it is worth the money to go custom. I would definatly recommend one of these 3 guys. I chose Ed and am VERY happy.
