gas spilling out of filler

I have a '62 Falcon wagon that is spilling gas out of the filler when I drive, with a gas cap on.I made a new gasket for between the body of the car and the filler-plate, since that part is now obsolete. The bolts and the gas cap are new as well, and it is still drizzling out gas! I thought this might take care of the issue. I am new at repairing cars, and could use any suggestions! Thanks.

Clean out the vent tube. It located just to the right of the inlet on the tank and runs to the back of trunk and over to the passenger side. Blow it out with compressed air. May help your problem.

You may be over filling it. You should stop putting gas in when it kicks off. Old cars dont have extra room for fuel expansion. Gas is cool when under ground and expands went it a warm area like on a hot day or by hot exhaust and it will come out the tank. My 69 Camper Special used to do it all the time.

Re: gas spilling out of filler

My 61 don't have an overflow tube and neither should yours.

You need to replace the cap with one that has a good rubber seal. The fuel is NOT coming out of the neck between the gasket and the trunk, it's coming out under the lip of the gas CAP.

Make sure that teh cap fits tightly, also make sure that the outer edge where the cap seals is FLAT.

If all that fails, stop putting 13 gallons into a tank that only holds 11 gallons....

Re: gas spilling out of filler

I have a similar problem with my '66 Falcon. Except, there are no problems while driving. Its when I'm filling with gas, right after the nozzle clicks off, a second later it pukes a bunch of gas back up. My first thought: "Vent tube is blocked." Only problem is, I can't find the vent tube! I have a shop manual for this car and it claims that the fuel is vented through the fill tube. Very aggrevating to say the least. My '66 Fairlane has a vent system, very similar to the one in the image that 1bad6t posted - no problems there. But my '66 Falcon has the fill tube on the left quarter panel. Any thoughts with this one?
