Intake Gasket

I need to replace the intake gasket on my 302 (Edel Air Gap), what is the best way to do it? any tips/tricks?

Re: Intake Gasket

I use the brush on gasket sealer on the head and bottom side of the gasket. Toss away the end gaskets and apply a thick bead of RTV in their place. Use a small bead of RTV around the coolant ports. Follow the torque pattern for the intake.

Excellent advice by Mr Brown...I'll just add to keep checking the bolt torques as the bolts tend to loosen as the intake settles down..It is not uncommon to have to go through all the bolts several times till they will finally stay at the torque setting.

Re: Intake Gasket

While you have it off, replace the bypass hose and the thermostat. A couple bucks now can save you headaches later.

Good ideas guys, thanks!
Do you think I should use RTV around the intank ports on the heads? or only on the coolent ports?

No...Only on the coolant ports....Another neat trick is to use a couple of studs to hold the gaskets in place and guide the intake exactly where it needs to go so you don't disturb the gaskets...After you set the intake in place and thread the rest of the bolts in you can remove the studs if you like and replace them with bolts....Some 302s I've worked on have had the 4 studs in the center right from the factory....You can also use gaskacinch to glue the gaskets in place if you don't like the stud idea..EDELBROCK 9300 GASGACINCH GASKET SEALER - SPECIAL PRICE!

Re: Intake Gasket

Change the oil and filter when you're done, before you fire it up.

The concern is that coolant and debris can fall into the lifter valley when you remove the intake. You should lay some rags in the bottom to catch any junk when scraping the old gasket off. Changing the oil will ensure that any coolant that fell through will be removed.
