heater motor / firewall hole

Hey guys,
Ive taken out my heater in the stang... one becasue I never use it (I have no heater hoses and the water pump is capped) and two, because I wanted to clean-up my engine bay all while trying to lighten as much as possible.
My issue is with the hole in the firewall that where the heater motor extended into the engine bay. What have some of you done to cover that? Is there a large grommet for this or do I make a cover?
I'm curious as to what "heater-delete" factory cars had???
Thanks,

Re: heater motor / firewall hole

water pump capped not a good idea-- run short hose from pump to intake -- --helps to cool intake-

Re: heater motor / firewall hole

I would cut a round cover using 22ga, and rivet it in place, with the cover on the inside of the firewall. Use some 3M body caulk strips to seal it. Rivet from the engine bay so they will be flat. Paint it and no one will even notice it.

Re: heater motor / firewall hole

I did the same thing on my 67. I cut a square piece of sheetmetal, and from the inside bolted it in using the existing 4 holes from the heater motor. Painted it black to match the firewall. I then drilled a 1" hole and put a grommet in the middle and use that to route my A/F gauge wires through.

Here are some pictures before I did the grommet

Re: heater motor / firewall hole

The factory heater delete car's didn't have the hole stamped in the first place...

Cut some sheet and just the existing holes like stated above

Re: heater motor / firewall hole

Here's a picture showing the sheetmetal I used to seal the hole. It was an easy install and was handy for having a spot to bring additional wires through the firewall.

Re: heater motor / firewall hole

I made a square aluminum plate as well.

I mounted an electrical bulkhead connector in the center because I need a fair number of wires to connect various sensors to my home made
data acquisition system.
