changing seals in steering box of f-250 4x4.Seals where a mess, looks like some one changed them and put them in wrong. Does anybody know which way the bottom seals go in? If you have any pictures it would be appreciated.

The big seal goes on top with the lip facing up. The small one goes in second with the lip down then the snap ring. Make sure you clean the snap ring groove. Pack a little grease in the top seal before installing and make sure it is seated and square. Directions usually come with the new seals.

Re: 1989 f-250

I've tried to reseal a couple of steering gears and haven't had much success.
Usually the sector shaft has too much play side-to-side and also has a worn surface where the seal rides.
Reman steering gears aren't that expensive.
