power steering to manual steering

This is for my 64 comet. As I understand from research, the manual steering boxes had greater reduction (22:1) except for the HI-PO ones that are the same as the power steering boxes (16:1). All I should need to do then is remove the pump and piston/valve assembly. Anything else I need to change?

Thanks
Tracy

Re: power steering to manual steering

I had a 16:1 on my Falcon and it was a bear to negotiate. I ended up going with rack and pinion, much better. The 16:1 would probably be great with power steering.

Re: power steering to manual steering

I did that swap to Queenie's 67 Camaro ... I'm not sure if Ford engineers things the same, but the pitman arm for the Camaro is shorter for Manual Steering ... something to possibly look into and consider.

Re: power steering to manual steering

I remember when the power steering pump died on our 69 fairlane, instead of replacing it I removed the whole system and had to reset the caster settings to a standard steering setting, power steering set ups use lots of caster for more stability, but their a bear to steer when the pump goes, or when the engine stalls.
