Can a 331 crank hit the oil pump?
Has anyone had this happen. I've had the same knocking noise in three different stroker shortblocks and never thought to check clearance between the 3.25 or 3.40 crank and oil pump housing. I had two machinist listen to it running and they both said it sounds like something is hitting. Another question would be how much clearance between the rod bolts and custom pan is necessary? I know mine is very close. Just asking before I pull the pan.
Thanks

Re: Can a 331 crank hit the oil pump?
Some cranks had plenty of clearance, some hit. Seems like the Eagle crank cleared ok (347) but I could be wrong...been too long since I broke it open. I do know that the 331 crank we bought (Scat, clearanced and lightened by crankshaft specialties) cleared, but it was CLOSE. I believe there was about .025" between the pump and the counterweight. I ground a little off the crank before I had it balanced and it balanced out just fine.
As for bolt-to-pan, that's not somethign I've run into before....so hopefully someone more experienced will chime in here.

Re: Can a 331 crank hit the oil pump?
Thanks for the pic! My crank is hitting something. I used a stethescope this morning and it sounds pretty bad in that area.
