Re: high voume vs. factory spec oil pump

My stock oil pump pushed 55psi cold and when I replaced it with a Melling 68HV(20-25% more volume) it shot up to 65psi cold.

Re: high voume vs. factory spec oil pump

Ok whats up with this? I have always ran HV pumps also, even with stock capacity oil pans with no problem.....But a couple weeks ago, I had a 410W spin the #2 rod bearing and destroy the engine, it had a HV, normal pressure pump, yea I know the old rule, 10psi per thousand RPMs.
This motor only had five 1/4 mile passes on it, on the sixth pass it blew at half track. We were turning 11.70s with our combo. The motor pulled to 7000 rpms hard during burn outs. We shifted @6600-6800 and launched at 3400. So..... with that said,
I'm leaning toward a high pressure pump because I don't think we had 70 PSI pressure. I did not have time to watch the gauge during the runs. I will be installing a light on the new motor.
