289 roller cam retrofit - push rod length?

Hi guys,

I am currently retrofitting my 289 block to use a roller cam (probably TFS Stage 1 or 2). I already have a set of Crane/FMS link-bar lifters and I am now trying to figure out the approx. pushrod length.

I know I will have to check it to make sure they are correct length so I want to order the right tool from Comp Cams. Just need an approximate starting point as there are several different lengths available.

Also, will the pushrod length stay the same between a Stage 1 (~.500 lift) and Stage 2 (~.550 lift) cams? I have a used Stage 2 cam here and was planning to use it in the engine for a trial fit.

Thanks,
Lukas

Pretty sure 289 with adjustable valvetrain is 6.905 stock. Non-adjustable is 6.875+-.

Doesn't really matter though. Just get the proper tools, adjustable pushrod, dial indicator, and a piston stop, and get it right.

Here is a link on how to measure PROPERLY !!

JIM MILLER

scroll down to pushrod length. Plenty of other info here too.

You need to Measure and get the proper ones, Comp Cams and others make adjustable tools to figure the correct legnth

For a rough guestimate, subtract the length of the stock lifter from the roller and the difference will get you into the ball park (shorter push rod). Just order a checking pushrod off that length.

CRANE may also have the rough length guide also as it is their lifter. The pushrod length will remain the same between the cams as long as proper geometry is correct with either. Just a detail of assembly.

Re: 289 roller cam retrofit - push rod length?

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I was aware that I needed to check the length to make sure that they would fit, but the tool is available in several different size ranges and I wanted to get the right one on the first try.

I finally got through to Ford Racing (not that easy as I live in Europe) and they advised a 6.250" pushrod should fit. As luck would have it, that is the stock 5.0 size, and I still have a set of those left over. Don't worry, I will still check the length to make sure that they are perfect.

Cheers,
Lukas
