Re: Building a street 351, need input

Ok, I've been looking at parts for a couple days now and I think I'm getting close to
what I want. With the 393 kit above I think these next few parts would compliment each other quite well.
Heads:
eBay Motors: SBF Ford Mustang Aluminum Heads 302 306 331 347 351 210 (item 350019795948 end time Feb-03-08 23:36:27 PST)

Cam:
Lunati Hydraulic Roller Tappet Camshafts: LUN-51018LUN - summitracing.com

Intake:
Edelbrock Torker II Intake Manifolds: EDL-5081 - summitracing.com

Well that's what I'm looking at right now.

First of all, irregardless of what the ad says, those are ProComp heads and they are made in China. Not that that is necessary a bad thing, but the ad is misleading and I wouldn't buy anything from someone who pulls this crap. Be forewarned. My knowledge is from the fact that I am an actual owner and user of the 210 ProComps and I've messed with them for a few years.

You should consider the basic ProComps as being from the bottom of the overall performance barrel. I've ran them (a modified and cleaned up set) on what should have been a well thought out motor/car and came to the realization that no matter what I did, I feel that I am being limited somewhere. I got some OK track times out of them, but the motor could not meet my expectations no matter what I did. Matching parts and the compression was right on the money (180-185lbs) with only 4-5% cylinder leak down. The car's suspension was also fully reworked with the blessing of Calvert Racing and Team Z. Should have been at least a couple of tenths faster than it was. I truly believe that the heads are the culprit.

On the street I have no complaints with the ProComps--I have more torque with this motor than what I needed for street duty. I've scared the crap out of myself a few times and now rather play at the track.

Flow testing rates the non-CNC'ed ProComp 210's on par with AFR 165's, and on top of that they whistle (not good.) They are not a true performance head, irregardless of valve/port size. I recently traded for some 205 AFR's and expect to see better all around performance this year with virtually no other changes other than fresh rings and bearings.

Do a search on ProComps here at FM or at the Corral and you will see what you could be getting into. You might find that your money would be better spend on a set of used Vic.Jrs or other well established heads.

HINT: If you are still considering the ProComps, at least look for a set of CNC'ed ones. Also, buy them bare and add good valves, springs, retainers and such as the basic package is normally pretty crappy. Oh, the valve covers didn't really want to seal right without being double gasketed so keep that in mind.

Good Luck!

I see what you're getting at there Dennis, I also noticed that the stud holes for the rockers are the same material as the heads and that just won't fly with me. Nothing is set in stone so I'll just have to keep shopping.

Oh yes, the threads are aluminum and brittle. Supposed to be torqued to 40lbs and that is barely enough. If you tighten them more, they will strip (ask me how I know). At 40lbs when you adjust your rockers, sometimes they will try to back out (again, ask me how I know.) I did find a good cure for that problem though in the form of big block Chevy rocker studs (exhaust) that I cut back to fit.

The thread problem was just another one of the things that I needed to devise an alternate solution to make the heads serviceable.

Edelbrock uses heli-coils all over there heads (another plus for VicJrs.) AFR does only the rocker studs--I've had to fix a few of the other threaded holes in my set.
