1970 FEAD (pwr steering pump)

I bought a 1970-71 Ford 460. I want to put it into my '67 Continental, but was informed that I would need a Front End Accessory Drive for it since my Continental's power steering was based off of a pump from the crank. This is a link to the only power steering pump I can find so far. Any one who is knowledgeable about this, let me know if this will work. Here is the link. Thanks a lot for the help.

Re: 1970 FEAD (pwr steering pump)

I think your going to need the whole setup from a 68 Continental with 460, some 68's had 462 and some had 460 all MkIII's were 460. I bought a 68 once and the entire front drive was different. Had the pump mounted on the timing cover and a seperate reservoir. AC mount was lower even had a tapered spacer under the carb to level it. Your best bet would be to find the whole setup in a salvage yard or try to adapt the 70's style pump to your car.

Good info here, unless you are up to a lot of fabbing and switching/trying different parts and systems.

The pumps you showed are Thompson belt driven. There may be room in the CONT engine compartment for the belt driven pump, but may interfere with AC mount.

The below Thumbnails may help with the visulation. This is a 1969 CONT 460 takeout.

Now remember, the 1968 CONT front metal was changed to accept the 460. You will have to modify your apron metal (or have expensive headers made) to fit the 460 into the 67.

You may also be able to use a later 7.5L EFI FEAD or go aftermarket (MARCH PULLEYS).

Re: 1970 FEAD (pwr steering pump)

Thanks for the help. I just found the entire FEAD system from a guy about 20 minutes from my house. Before I go and buy anything. I am not sure he has a 68 460 or not, but getting the parts from a 70 460 including pwr steering pump, will this work? I am taking the A/C off completely until a much later time so that will not get in the way as long as I can get a belt!

I looked up the MARCH PERF. site and that is a nice system! Maybe one day, but not any time soon for a least $1,000! Good price but cannot afford that at this moment. Thanks for all the help and let me know about the 70 pulleys in my '67. Thanks.

Thanks a lot. I found the forum on "Pictures of MEL aftermarket goods" and read the talk about the expensive headers! I was very interested staying up till 4am reading up and checking out sites on all the parts out there.

Re: 1970 FEAD (pwr steering pump)

Sorry for all the posts. I just thought of something. The pics are of a 1969 460...it has the power steering like my '67 coming off of the crank. Is there any way possible to convert my 1970 460 to have that crank pump power steering? Wish I had 2 engines to compare-with and without the power steering on the crank. Thanks

Make sure you get all the accessories, Timing cover, Balances, Spacer Ect. Get the whole front of the motor if you want to use the lincoln style pump

Is this so I can use my crank based pump on the 70 engine? I am able to convert the 70 460 to crank pump power steering? Thanks.

Re: 1970 FEAD (pwr steering pump)

The 68/69 CONT and MARK came with the 460 and crank driven PS. You need the timing cover, collar and pump. The remote reservoir is needed also.
