Re: Pushrod Length?

The Questionable Sentence was meant for Cleveland_Rocks......

I do apologize if you've taken it the wrong way but its the Truth.... If you can't take the time to learn how to measure for a push rod lenght, you shouldn't be playing with Performance Engines..... Plain and Simple.

Re: Pushrod Length?

Ralph- If you'll go back and re-read Cleveland rocks reply #3 and my response #4, you'll see the whole wise-guy thing got started long before Dfree 383 responded. Neither reply was meant for you, and the objectionable line started in reply #3. Without that reply, you would have gotten advised to check your pushrod length with a checker without any added comments from us wise-guys.

Okay... sorry, no hard feelings to any of you all. I did try to measure with an adjustable pushrod, but the knurling on it wouldn't fit through my guide plates. Perhaps I will talk to the guy that I borrowed the adjustable rod from about letting me grind down the knurl a bit. Obviously, I'm not just going to throw some pushrods in there and go. I was really looking for a starting point because we were discussing it last night. This is really my first engine build, but I'm getting help from a trusted source, and I've been learning a lot. I'm sure we will figure a way to measure and that he will do the right thing.

Re: Pushrod Length?

Since you guys are already on the subject can I throw out a similar question?

I also have a '65 289 block and am soon going to change out my GT40 heads for a set of AFR165's. Personally, I wouldn't know what to do with a length checker if I had one so I too have the same question. Yes, I've heard the comments prior to my question so I know I'm stumbling into a can 'o worms but I thought I'd just ask.

If there isn't a "known length" for this application what is the process for finding out? What I mean is: How do they work?

Thanks!

Re: Pushrod Length?

Comp Cams Sells a Nice Set, I believe you can buy the individualy to. I got a set last year, (Got tired of borrowing them) I think they where around $60 for a set of 5.

Just get one thats close to typical factory legnth for your motor and go from their.

Re: Pushrod Length?

65falconlover- First off , let me say I owned a '65 Falcon back in the '70's. It was a 6-banger station wagon, but I loved it- it was my first car. My brother bought a 63 Falcon Sprint and and performance built a 289 for it- awesome car, you have good taste. The easiest thing to do is to tell you to google "pushrod length checker" and go to Comp Cams site. You'll find all the explainations we were trying to drum into cleveland's head there. Before you leave ,though, check out the Tech dept. at the top of the page and go to Heads. You will find a neat little article on how to make your own pushrod length checker. I think this is my second day on this forum, (maybe third) and I'm already learning bunches and making friends and enemies hand over foot, what a great forum!

I had a similar problem and ended up putting the pushrod in upside down..I carefully put a piece of masking tape along the length of the pushrod that lined up with the line on the pushrod checker..That way I could use the edge of the piece of tape as my reference line..This only works with the intake removed so you can hold onto the bottom piece of the pushrod(normally the top when right side up)

Re: Pushrod Length?

Ralph, this is probably going to show my ignorance off, as I haven't dealt with pushrod guide plates, and this may be silly or genius, but, can you turn the pushrod plate around?

Re: Pushrod Length?

You can just remove the guide plate and tighten the stud back down.

Haven't seen so many posts in a row by dfree that don't give me one single reason to disagree with him. LOL!

Jim, how old do I have to be to get one of those shirts? I feel more like an old fart every day!
