MSD Rev Limiter
Looking around at getting a MSD rev limiter. Any recommedations?? All I have now is a Davis Unified Ignition HEI. Haven't gotten a chance to wind out my motor yet. Peak shift points will be around 6500rpms. These 35-60mph roads around here haven't allowed me to go past 5K rpms.

Re: MSD Rev Limiter
An MSD 6-AL is always good, unless you are looking to launch it at the drag strip then you can get a 2 stage limiter. The 6-AL is a very versatile unit for the street and the track. I think you can pick one up at Summitracing for under $220. The rev limiter pills are extra you can get those from Summit also for $30. I put an MSD in my FE 390 and it idles smoother, and there is definitely a noticable improvement in throttle response.
I see more MSD 6 and 6-AL boxes on cars and trucks than any other ignition box. That HAS to mean something. They are reliable, powerful, flexible...
Good luck on your search,

Re: MSD Rev Limiter
I have just sold my MSD6AL and bought a CraneHI6, which will give better spark apparently. The crane is Digital where the MSD is analouge, and you have to keep buying pills till you have enough to suit your needs with the msd.
Where the Crane is fully adjustable on the unit, and actuall cheaper than the MSD.

Re: MSD Rev Limiter
Actually the Crane HI6 (6440) is the exact same price as the MSD-6AL box. Both are $219.95
I dont know anyone personally that runs a Crane ignition box. Are they Any good? Back in August I bought my 6-AL an they were $236. so the price on em has dropped a little.
I think its more of whats familiar and brand loyalty. I had never run an ignition box before last year, and everyone I knew was ruinning a MSD-6 or 6-AL so I decided to "Go with the flow".
I think anyway you go, you're gonna be better off than with a stock setup, even the Durasparks which are getting REALLY hard to find. And definitely get rid of the points and put in a Pertronix Ignitor, or Ignitor II. More accurate and a more reliable signal.

Re: MSD Rev Limiter
I have been running the same 6AL since 92 with no issues what so ever. The heck with the pills, get yourself a selector. Want a different setting? Turn the knob. Want to keep from breaking out? Turn the knob. Best of all I can do it right from my drivers seat.

Re: MSD Rev Limiter
Thanks for all the feedback guys. Looks like I'll be going with a MSD 6-AL. Thanks again.

Re: MSD Rev Limiter
Not sure about the other brands but with the 6AL when you hit the limiter it shuts down smoothly. No backfires or bad stuff. The motor just lays down smoothly until you grab another gear.
Money well spent.

Thats odd. Another reason i am getting rid of the MSD 6AL is the limiter is HARSH. Mine is set at 7000 at the moment and when it hits it, it feels like rods just come out the motor.
Do some comarisons on with the spec sheets between the MSD6 and Crane 6 digital and you will see the difference.

+1
I just got a 6AL this year and the rev limiter was so smooth I had a hard time at first realizing when it came on..My old limiter was built into my Mallory tach and if I touched it I would get a huge backfire out of the exhaust.
