Radiator tank oil cooler

Gentlemen. I need to replace a lower radiator tank oil cooler (67 Mustang). I can't find one. I could replace the existing cooler with several elongated copper coils. Any suggestions as to where I could find an original cooler and/or has anyone installed copper coils? Best regards. John--Las Vegas.

Re: Radiator tank oil cooler

I have to assume that you are looking for a concourse type radiator.... Your best bet may be take it to a radiator shop and have them disassemble the tanks from the core in that case, rig up your own coiled copper setup inside, and have them vat the core and reassemble... you can get aftermarket radiators all over the place or go with Summitt's $89 universal oil/tranny cooler/oil filter relocation kit, Thats what I got for the Gal.

Summit SUM-G4978 - Summit Combination Fluid Coolers - summitracing.com

If it doesn't have to be original I say improve on the original design.

Re: Radiator tank oil cooler

John,
replace the radiator - not the cooler.
The cooler is fit to the tank in such a way that it makes it very difficult to replace. Running a few coils of copper tubing will not replace the cooling capacity of an internal cooler. You are just as likely to ruin the transmission from overheating with your home-made cooler as you are if you just run a small external cooler to replace the cooler in the radiator. Unless you are an engineer and have calculated the heat transfer then leave it to the professional to engineer the coolers. You are dollars ahead by replacing the radiator with a new one that has a new and good factory cooler installed.
