9" axles are stuck. Cant remove them

Guys, I aquired a 9" rear end and I started to dissasemble it. With the 4 retaining bolts removed and brakes removed, I can NOT get the axle to budge. I let the axle bearing soak in WD40. We tried hitting it hard with a hammer, heating the bearing with a torch and lifting the entire assembly up in the air by the axle flange!

Still does not budge, didnt even slightly move. The axle is a '69 model and has never been torn apart. Everything moves and rotates freely. What am I missing?? We have beat the crap out of the axle flange trying to get it free from the housing.

Any tricks or ideas???

Slide hammer works great.

Use one of the drums reversed on the axle with a few lug nuts loosely tightened and use that like a slide hammer , worked when I pulled mine apart.

Most old motor heads that I know suggest that you attach the wheel to it with the lugs on maybe a few turns, and use the tire as a slide hammer. Push the tire up on the studs as far as they will go, then pull back as hard and fast as you can muster. I've heard of it working when a lot of other things would not.

Ok, I can give that a shot. I figured lifting the axle on end and pulling up on the axle using the weight of the rear end to oull out the axle would work. Now Im just sore.

Problem is also that the alxe is not bolted to a car, so using a slide on it just want to move the entire housing with. Jeeeese, didnt think this would be difficult.

And now after hammering on the flanges you will need new axles as well.

Im aware of that. These axles are rusted, and one has a broken stud. They will be replaced.

The reversed drum trick worked for me too. I also built a slide hammer out of an old axle. I drilled the holes to 5/8s then slipped a piece of schedule 40 pipe around the axle and welded a stop on the end. It worked well.

this is the way I did a 8 incher that did not want to cooperatate !!!! Brace one end with a chain to a solid structure(cement colum...) with another chain, bolt it down to the axel flange using two of the studs across from each other and making a "U" with the chain and use a pulling device !!!! (truck<car<come-along<horse<cow<dog....) or a 31 spline axel shaft "T"ed on the chain and bang it out !!!!good luck !!!!
