Proper Ring gap

I am building a 331 stroker to put in a daily driver. I am planning on using nitrous at some point and it will see the track. What should I gap the rings to? Should the first and second compression rings differ in gap?

Re: Proper Ring gap

The ring mfg should have a recommendation, but I'd use a top of .022 and a second of .024 as a minimum. Best way is to determine how much spray you are going to put on it and ask the ring supplier.

Yes, ring supplier should have a sheet that comes with the rings and tells you how to calculate required gap for your application, as well as how the ring gaps should be oriented on the installed piston. I buy Mahle rings and they have great instructions, very detailed.

Re: Proper Ring gap

I bought a Scat kit with Keith Black pistons and rings and It did have a sheet in it. I was just wondering if that is indeed what I should go with. Thanks for the conformation!

Re: Proper Ring gap

since you have a suggestion sheet go with it, but if you are ever without a rule of thumb is .004" per inch of bore as a minimum. nitrous does need more as you've noted (dont know the ruleofthumb for nitrous). hopefully your spreadsheet takes nitrous into account, if not call a machinist that has his own nitrous car (I love my town).

Re: Proper Ring gap

I see that you mensioned KB pistons but you didn't specify forged or hyperutectic. There are special ring gap requirements for hyper pistons. See the following URL.
