New Guy! Same ole Q's 351w

Hi im a new guy here as the title says. If I miss some letters im sorry my key board is down and im mouse typing. Why im here is simple I need some simple advise on wich of my 2 cams to use so im going to list cam grinds then all the rest the engine/truck info.

Both Cams are Comp XEs and brand new in boxes I own both already.

#1 XE268 510ISH IE 512EX lost ths ones card
#2 XE284h 541 544 both are 110 LSA I belive I know the 284 is.

351 Windsor
Heads-ProAction Cylone 200cc 58cc polished chamber 2.02 1.60
Intake-Eddy RPM Airgap Matched Ported
Proform Roller Rockers
Pistons Speed Pro Hyper Flat Top 4 relief+12.00(they look like more than 12)
Stock deck
Vehicle is a 1970 International Scout 800-A
T-19 trans 4.2.1 1st gear
Centerforce Dual Fricton clutch set
Dana 44 rear with 3.73's on 31s this is way more Hotrod than 4x4 hardly ever see's 4x4

Compresion Ratio Calc's say aprox 9.98.1
What im trying to do here is use what I have eather the 268 or 284 I want as much as I can get but dont want a compleat low RPM Dog eather this truck has plenty of 1st gear.....penty and its pretty light. I have been leaning to the safer 268 but I have the head and clearece for the 284 and figured the extra bleed off might not hurt. I would love here from anyone with eather cam or just honest opinion's before I make a decision. Joe Sherman said 375hp400tq with the 268 but he never comnted on the 284. I just got the block from the shop and this is my last big decision to make.

Thanks Matt

Comp Cams has a free tech department that you can call for advice on their cams. That should be your first step, although they sometimes tend to be on the conservative side. My thoughts are to use the 284 cam. Most cams I've seen in the 268 range are hard to tell from stock. With your heads and compression, that engine should love the bigger cam unless you're lugging it over big rocks at 300 RPM.

Re: New Guy! Same ole Q's 351w

i would think with the XE284H cam that you would be around 425-450 horse. My 58cc World Jr's give me 11:0 compression w/flattop piston in my 347. That XE284H pulls like a SOB up top and I have 3.55's. My car weighs rougly 3400lbs with a Tremec TKO 5 speed. Joe built a 347 with the XE284H cam and mildly ported Performer RPM heads w/10.5:1 compression. Made 455hp/435TQ.

Re: New Guy! Same ole Q's 351w

I have a XE274H and if I had to do it over I would drop back to the 268......the 274 make advertised power from 1800-6000 RPM's and it has little or nothing below 1800 RPM's!!

It is in my 408W stroker in my CR Cobra replica (2600#) and if it were in a heavier car I had to drive a lot it would not be fun in traffic......IMHO??

My $.02....FWIW!!

With the weight of your vehicle... DEFINITELY the 268.

Re: New Guy! Same ole Q's 351w

If your set on the XE284H, you will suffer some lowend......but up top....HOLD ON!!. But, yes the XE268H will probably be better suited for your application. Regardless with the kind of power you'll be making, I'd look to replace your Proform rockers sometime soon. I've heard these are Chinese knockoffs and have heard of them breaking by other ford members. Scorpion or Comp Cams roller rockers seem to be some good quality ones.

Re: New Guy! Same ole Q's 351w

The Scout wieghs about 3600ish with a 700# Ih 345. In the ole 345 I built I run a Isky 270h its rpm rang was 2000-6000 I could still tow with that cam with my gearing. But IH engines are low RPM TQ monsters so were talking two diff animals there. Im buying new rockers anyone tried the Harland Sharp or Howards Cams ones?
Im leaning to the 284 simply because I own em both and I can always buy a new set of lifters and do it one evening and I dont want it too sound mild I love a little chop. But im not 100% mind made up yet.

Re: New Guy! Same ole Q's 351w

The XE284H....needs to idle at 1100-1200rpms. So it's rough but not lopey at that idle. It performs best at 2300-6500rpms. You want a matched set of new lifters to go with any new cam so don't skimp and use any used ones. Miller rocker arms have been a good choice too. You can see them at

Re: New Guy! Same ole Q's 351w

No im a nutt about things like lifters! I have comp lifters although I have since learned some people dont like em. I did it to warrenty cam THEN but never built it until now there still in the box.1100 is about what the isky's idle was but this engine should rev above 1100 alot faster than the IH did. Anyone used the DUI distrib? The plug and pay hei sounds good anway.

Matt

I have the DUI HEI currently. It was pretty easy to hook up.
