Re: 351c street sometimes strip

Yeah, sounds like he's set with using a cam around the .524 lift area. That .541 lift might be a little too high for him and the springs he wants to reuse.

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

He is considering a cam with .526" / .536" ....
Good luck with it anyway.

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

is .524 to .541 too much for the srpings? since i have no clue what the spring pressure is or what they will take i want it to be a s close as possible to what is in there now (.524) I thank all of you for the advive you have given me. I agree that a different cam would be better like the XE would be a great cam or the 275DEH. I think that the .536 lift is max for me like I always say better safe then sorry

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

Yes..... are the springs you have new? If they are old/oem...toss em. If new(ish) I would find out what (rate) they are. Take one off and get it tested, if you can't find what they are. See if they are close to what the cams needs are....no-matter which cam you choose. Make sure they are at/near correct installed height.
Springs are a critical part of the deal....whatever the cam. Weak or mismatched springs are a recipe for disaster. Clevelands with OEM valves are re-knowned for losing the odd head/pulling keepers thru retainers = hurt/destroyed engine. Not enough spring pressure is worse than too much... it promotes dropping valves.
Suitable springs and decent valve/valve gear are the best insurance you will buy for a Cleveland.... period.

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

springs are newish 5k on them. I assume that the machine shop ( a good one) matched the cam and springs but i dont know. I called them but its been too long and he doesnt remember, i told him what cam i was thinking about gitting (crane h-288-2) he said it would be fine. The reason im saying the crane insted of the comp (280 h)is that the crane has different lifts and durations toward the exhaust also the power band is higher which will match my torker intake

what do ya think?

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

I think your going to sleep a whole lot better getting NEW springs and knowing for sure how big a cam you could install. 5 year old springs......it's a gamble I wouldn't want to take. New springs are not that expensive.

Yeah, 3 inch pipes will not hurt anything. Needing back pressure in the exhaust system is an old wives tale IMO. People have heard it repeated (mostly by car mag's) so often it became a fact.

By the way, Edelbrock does not make an RPM or Airgap intake for the 4 barrel 351C heads, so it's a good thing you decided not to buy one. Blue Thunder makes a good dual plane intake for 4 bbl heads. It's pretty pricey, though. Something like $425.
