351c street sometimes strip

I have a 70 351c 4v close chamber with a vintage torker on it and a 750 dp. exhaust hooker headers 1 7/8 is 3inch from header back to super 44s. the problem i have is the cam what should i be running? I have a crane 272 durnation with .524 lift equal on both sides. it says its good from 1800-5200
Is this a good combo with the torker intake? I have a 4sp with 380 gears.

Clevelands like split pattern cams. Your Crane is a single pattern. It would likely perform better with a different cam.

A XE262H or the XE274H cam would probably be a pretty good cam for ya. I'd swap the intake for a Performer RPM or Airgap, would help the performance. They have pretty aggressive ramps that are newer technology(5 years old). I believe your 272 Crane is like a 20 year old cam.

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

Like C/S says, 4V clevelands definitely prefer split pattern cams, biased towards the exhaust side ofcourse. They also like lift more than duration.
As far as manifolds go (and cams), it depends on what you want or expect from it. Nothing wrong with the Torker, the Performer (don't make an RPM for the 4V) isn't a great deal better than the stock dual plain though much lighter ofcourse and the Air-gap will give you abit more mid range than both of them but probably still give away some top end to the Torker.
If you are going to re-cam, I would stick with what you have and see how you go... a better grind will also give you more mid range punch than you have now anyway. If you want more bottom/mid-range after that, pay the dollars and put the Air-gap on. Torkers really like a spacer as well....

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

I have a 71 351C 4V and this is the cam I use with a "Torker". It gives a real mean sounding, rough idle, and pulls extremely hard in the midrange. Great street and strip set up. The cam is a "Speed-Pro" pn# CS-173R, and the details are below. One thing I was told was that the distance between lobe centers at 108 Degrees is better for the Cleveland than the 110 degree lobe centers.

Intake .503 valve lift 308 duration Hyd Intake .291 lift at cam 224 duration
Exhaust .507 vlift 314 duration Hyd Exhaust .293 lift at cam 223 duration
Max intake lift 104 ATC and 108 degrees on Lobe centers.
All of this sit's below an Edelbrock "Torker" with a Holley 750 vacum secondary. I have posted on the Tech forum, the thread is called "Spread Bore or Straight Bore". You may want to check it out.

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

I like the info thanks. I had the motor put together by a local machine shop and took whatevere advice they wanted me to do. I also gave them the cam as a base for the valve train. cam lift is .524

I was thinking of using the comp 280H it has a .530 lift but i dont know what the springs will take and dont want to brake them. The springs are green if that does anything to help

I think I ll stay with the torker and switch the cam but i dont want to replace the already new valve train.

Got a anther question The book on says that a stock 70 351 4v has 10.7 to 1 compression I bored it .30 over with TRW flat top pistons also surface the heads what compression should I have?

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

I think you would be fairly happy with it.
Don't skimp on springs though...

Re: 351c street sometimes strip

I know alot of other companies fall short in the power dept, especially Edelbrock. I'd stay with Comp Cams since they have been proven winners in alot of combo's built. But that is just me. You do what you want. It's your money.
