rusty cylinder walls?

I bought an engine off someone, took it apart and discovered that it had a blown headgasket, and had been sitting for some time. some of the cylinders have rust on the walls, as well as all kinds of gunk. I sprayed them down with WD40 to soak til tomorrow. My question is, if I took it to a shop and had it bored .030 over, do you think it would take care of the rust? it's not just a light surface rust like on bare metal just sitting out...of course I wouldn't know for sure without an actual machinist looking at it, but I just want to know if the cylinder walls can be saved or if I should go whoop some ass cuz I was told the engine was running when it was pulled

Re: rusty cylinder walls?

30 over will take out scratches as well as rust.

Most often a 10 cut will take out rust spots depending on the time it was sitting with water. But 30 will definitely take care of it unless something other than the head gasket blew.

Re: rusty cylinder walls?

I don't have any idea how much material .030 is so I had to ask. I was probably going to overbore it anyways so if it still works then there's no issues. it's if I spent $250 on a big ugly paperweight that we have problems...

Re: rusty cylinder walls?

Are there any #'s stamped into the top of the pistons?

What motor are we talking about anyway? 289-351 or 352-428?

it's a 302 out of a 5.0 mustang. didn't notice any casting numbers, other than the E7TE on the heads..

Re: rusty cylinder walls?

Small comment...."You've checked and made sure the block is standard bore"? I've bought "standard bore" blocks in the past and they turned out to be out .030 already.

Re: rusty cylinder walls?

All the machinists I have ever dealt with would let you know if the walls could/would be cleaned up BEFORE they did any boring or honing.

Re: rusty cylinder walls?

That they will certainly do.

About the piston's. they will say .020 .030 .040 or .060 if they are oversized.

Wirewheel the top of one lightly and see if anything's there.

Re: rusty cylinder walls?

I'd haul that motor back to where it came from and ask for my money back. The pistons look like they are rusted to the cylinders and will have to be hammered out as the motor probably won't rotate. There is a chance that one or more cylinders have a small pin hole rusted through into the water jacket. I had one like that once.
