Are 1966 mustang drum/disc front spindles the same

Are the front spindles on a 1966 mustang all the same. If one was to pick up a set of spindles equipped with drum brakes could one use this set up and convert it to disc brakes.

Thanks

Greg

If you search all around and ask for opinions, you are going to hear a lot of different stories about this, but from my personal experience - I am running my original 1966 Mustang drum spindles with a switched out K/H disc brake setup for the past two years. If you're running something other then the original setup (e.g. Grenada setup), than it can be different.

Re: Are 1966 mustang drum/disc front spindles the same

Stock 65-67' Mustang 4 piston disc brakes work fine on the drum brake spindles. I've used this swap several times throughout the years when disc brakes were easier to find in the bone yards--I have 67' discs on my Clone GT race car in my sig which originally had drums. There are no advantages to the 67's over the 65/66's, that was just the donor car at the time.

The 65-67' discs use an adapter that bolts to the same place that the drum backing plate is currently attached. The bearings that come with the discs are the correct diameter for the drum spindle too.

About the only issue I've had with this swap is that there is a variation in brake hoses throughout the years. 67' style has a different end on the body side, but the 65/66 disc hoses can be swapped. There are other small variations between the 65/66 and 67' sets, but if you get the complete set off one or the other, you will have no further issues.

As mentioned above, swapping newer style single piston disc brakes normally will require the matching spindles.

Re: Are 1966 mustang drum/disc front spindles the same

I think there were a couple of different engineering / casting numbers for V8 spindles on the 65/66 cars. That's where the confusion is in general.

The facts are-
1) The V8 drum and disc spindles are physically the same for the purpose you are interested in..... swapping from drum to disc.
2) The 6 cyl spindles ARE different..... those won't work.

Re: Are 1966 mustang drum/disc front spindles the same

The information is excellent. I have a set of spindles that have been confirmed to be off a V8 with drum brakes. I have located some cars with six cylinders that would be great for a project and I know that a good set of spindles are better than putting on some off shore junk.

Thanks

Greg

And if you're feeling enthusiastic, look for C9ZZ-3105-C and 3106-C. Those are the ones that take the big bearings but have the 65/66 geometry. Pretty much rare as #@$$ these days......
