Timing my 302

I guess the eyes are the first to go. even with my glass's on, I just can't see, those little marks, numbers, on the balancer, to time my engine properly, does anyone know how to mark up , the balancer? to make those little marks, more visible, Thanxs

Re: Timing my 302

I used white paint. Filled in the marks but wiped it off the main surface. They show up alot clearer that way. Silver paint would work too, or any color that is a good contrast to your current balancer color.

Re: Timing my 302

MSD Timing tape is only $6.00 for the pack. has every size tape for any dampner.

Plus it goes up to 60 Degrees, very important if your really trying to tune your engine. The Dampners often don't have that range.

Re: Timing my 302

To make life easier on my old eyes when I build an engine I always paint the dampener black. Then I find Top Dead Center (TDC) on the number one cylinder (using the cam and crank marks and double checking with a piston stop) then I mark the crank with a file where the pointer lines up with TDC. Then I mark the first 20 degrees in 2 degree steps. Then I mark 30 degrees and 34 degrees and 36 degrees. After putting the file marks i use white out or white paint to make the file marks more visible. I can touch up any blurbs with black after the white dries.
That way I can time the engine at 3000 RPM and be sure it is right on the mark for best HP without guessing. I also mark the dampener and the inner hub with a white line to show me if the dampener slips on the hub.

Re: Timing my 302

I paint the area where the marks are white and paint the marks black. Almost glows in the dark.
