Picking a new alternator for 289

This is a very basic question, sorry, working on my first car restoration. I'm starting with the entire engine.

I've read about the various alternator replacements for my stock 289 (no a/c). It seems that today's alternators pump out more voltage than the original ones and that may cause a problem for the voltage reg. Any advice? Do I need to make sure the voltage regulator can work properly with the alternator? One parts site I visited said there was an issue with using a new alternator with the original regulator.

thanks

depending on how much you want to spend you can get a junkyard internal regulated 3G alternator. Or pickup one from these guys, thats what I did.
Its got a wire that goes to ground, another that goes to one end of starter solinoid (or battery), and another to ingition on. No more external regulator.

I'd do what strtcar says and do the 3G swap. I've done several for customers and did my own Cougar. Very easy to do and the 3G puts out plenty of voltage/amps.

To clarify - if you switch to a modern 3G alternator, you can remove the stock regulator and associated wiring. It's not needed. The Gen 2s and Gen 3s have the regulator built into the unit.

You will need to use a #4ga. cable from the alternator to the battery (solenoid) if you use a 3G alternator. You will also have to remove the ammeter if you have one. It will become a fire hazzard. Use a volt meter in its place.

A newer 60 to 80 amp will bolt in but a regulator is probably less than $15. Even an 80 amp is a stretch for a 66 wiring harness. I would not put too big an alt in unless you want to put in a fuse link and auxiliary fuse block.

Re: Picking a new alternator for 289

it all depends on the electrical load you are placing on the stock system !!!!! I myself installed a g3 130 amp. in my 73 maverick 4speed because I have two electric fans,AC, msd 6al and a Hi-power stereo system in the works. the big plus is less wires and the life time replacement, but for a nice replacement/factory look I would use a solid state regulator and a quality rebuild the original alternator or buy a hi-power replament and keep the original. on my 63 fairlane I put a 63amp alt. with a new regulator and gave away the OEM generator and brackets...
