Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

What about a stall converter and like 3.55/3.73 gears?

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

Would this cam be better?
COMP Cams 35-351-8 - COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Camshafts - summitracing.com
XE270HR
Duration=218 int./224 exh.
Lift=0.512 int./0.512
LSA=114

I changed the Application in CamQuest to "Excellent in Daily Driver, Slight-Mild to Choppy Idle" (from "High Performance Street, Choppy to Mild-Rough Idle") and it said the 270 is best

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

You have to be honest with yourself, and when it comes to converter and rear end gears, these are the biggest things that affect the performance of your car. The last cam you picked I would NOT even use at all because of the 114 lobe centers. If you do not ubderstand these things, you should let a professional engine builder make the selection for you. There are just too many ways you can go wrong. I can get a custom made grind that will work better than any of the ff the shelf cams. Again, you must be true with yourself about the converter and rearend gears.

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

I really don't need a professional engine builder to do a mild setup. As I keep saying, this isn't a racecar. I just want parts that will work with what I have now, since once I get the engine and interior done I will be pretty much out of money for the time being.

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

Why does this cam say "For engines that did not come from the factory with hydraulic roller cams?" It's basically the same cam, except .001 more lift and 110 LSA

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

Roller blocks have taller lifter bores to accomodate the taller roller lifters. That cam has a smaller base circle so the lifters sit down further in the bores.

I thought it had somethin to do with that.

Someone on another board suggested a small cam, "262/268 adv dur 0.550 lift." Cams around that are

XE266HR
RPM range 1600 to 5600
Mild modifications, 3.27-3.73 gear, mass air, larger throttle body.
Adv. Dur. 266in/274ex
Dur @ .050 216in/224ex
Lift .544in/.555ex
LSA 112°

270HR
Mild street performance. Slight lope at idle. Stock
torque converter and gears. Good
stock HO upgrade.
RPM range 1800 to 5000
Adv. Dur 270in/270ex
Dur @ .050 215in/215ex
Lift .533in/.533ex
LSA 110°

The XE cams say they're for "Computer Controlled Hyd. Roller Camshafts (FOR EFI) 1985-95 engines originally equipped w/ hyd. roller cams." Does that mean it wouldn't work in a carbed engine?

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

Ya know, I am in your same boat with the choosing on the parts on a budget. I have a stock 70 302 in a 70.5 Falcon. This is definately a budget power upgrade for me. If it isn't on Craigslist, I'm not buying it. That will limit the headaches of choosing parts real quick as long as the parts I do buy match. I am just adding a small cam, headers, manifold, and four barrel. So far, I have purchased a new Wieand Action Plus manifold, a new holley 600, new carb spacer, and new intake gaskets for $225.00, all off the same guy, as a package. My quest continues for the cam and headers. Are there better parts out there? You bet. But I'm sticking to the plan of $400, for everything. Anything I bolt on will be an upgrade. If I make 300 horsies, I will be lucky. But that will be 85 more horsies than I have now. Then maybe a Craigslist nitous kit (somebody smack me as I have to stick to the plan!)
