Carb/Intake/Cam?

figured I'd just make a new thread to be all about this rather than continuing the old one....

'65 Coupe
302 engine
Edelbrock Performer RPM heads
Erson 1.6 roller rockers
C4 trans
Stock rear end
Longtube headers

I bought the heads/rockers for pretty cheap, now I need to get a cam, intake and carb to match up with them. I'm not making a racecar, don't need max power, just something hotter than stock. Ultimately just off the shelf stuff that will do well with the heads.

Someone suggested the Comp XE274 cam. The Comp website has the XE274 listed under EFI roller cams, and the description says:
"Hydraulic Roller-2500 stall, 3.55-3.73 gears, better heads, intake and fuel system. "
Powerband=2200-6200
Duration@ .050"=224/232,
Lift=.555/.565
LSA=112

Under Carb'd roller cams, there are some blower and nitrous cams, and some magnum cams, 270HR and 280HR
270HR
"Hydraulic Roller-Mild street performance. Slight lope at idle. Stock torque converter and gears. Good stock HO replacement."
Powerband=1800-5000
Duration@ .050"=215/215
Lift=.533/.533
LSA=110

280HR
"Hydraulic Roller-Street Machine and limited high performance street use. Best with 5 speed, 3.40 to 4.10, aftermarket intake and headers. Needs stall."
Powerband=2500-6000
Duration@ .050"=224/224
Lift=.560/.560
LSA=110

I downloaded the CamQuest6 program, plugged in some info, and it recommended the 280HR (part numbers 35-430-8 and 35-314-8) and the XE274HR (35-518-8). Would you guys think the 280HR is better or worse than the XE274HR?

As for intakes...I was originally going to use stock heads and such, and get a Weiand Action+ intake as the article on the main site suggested. Now that I have the heads, I don't know if the Action+ manifold would be the best bet, since it's rated idle-5500 and the heads are 1500-6500. Would a Performer RPM intake be best here?

And for carbs, I was originally thinking an Edelbrock 1406 with the Weiand intake, but now I'm wondering if an 1806 would be better (600 vs 650). I like how the carbs look versus the Holleys, and if one of those will work I'll just go with them.

Some people have been suggesting custom cams, race torque converters, etc etc. They seem to miss the point that this is a pretty budget build, and will quite possibly never see the track. So, as much as I'd like to throw even more hundreds and thousands of dollars into this, I'm sticking with cheaper, off the shelf stuff. So please, tell me what you think about the parts I listed and if there are other, similarly priced pieces that would work better.

Oh and since the heads have the 2.02 valves, it's been said the pistons need notching to clear them. I'm probably going to replace the stock pistons with these Speed Pro ZH273CP - Speed-Pro Hypereutectic Pistons - summitracing.com, since they don't cost that much more and the pistons I have were rusted to the cylinder walls and are pretty much ugly paperweights at this point. Would those replacements need to be notched, you think?

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

looking at intakes, there's the Weiand Stealth intake, and the Typhoon Power+Plus intake. both seem to be similar to the Performer RPM. do any of the 3 have an advantage over the others?

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

OK, I'll respond. The Weiand Stealth is definitely the better intake. If you like Koolaid go with what everyone else does.

I'm waiting! lol

Re: Carb/Intake/Cam?

The 268 is the biggest you shouldd use with a stock converter and high rear end gears. A 600 carb of your choice , I would use an Edelbrock, The Edelbrock RPM performer is very good too. I use these same parts all the time, and they are very hard to beat.
