460 Camshaft Removal Help

Ok guys. I picked up my $200 460 last friday. Today I am disassembling it. I have the intake off, heads off, front cover off, timing chain off, but for the life of me I cannot get the camshaft out. I have remove all lifters too. There is a hump in the valey about 3/4 of the way back with 2 threaded galley plugs (so it looks like, this is my first 460 and I have no books). I have removed the cover and the two bolts after the camshaft timing chain sprocket too. That almost got me. It moves, maybe 1/2" then stops. I found out why it was smoking too. SO far I can tell two of the pistons have damage at the edges. Bores aren't scratched. (.040 over already too)

Thanks guys! I'll get some pics of my project up soon. These intake ports remind me of my old 351C 4V heads.

Ok I got it out now. Got the motor turned over. This is what I have so far...

DT9E Block
D3VE Heads
D9 Intake
C9AE Rods (are these the football rods? I thought they would be a XTXX) Looks like 1969 Rods.
Pulling the CRank and rods next.

interesting hodge podge of parts....

C9AE Rod CAPS
and
D6VE Rods.

Are the rods good or should I just get some aftermarket H or I-Beams. Only looking for 400hp/500lb torque.

Re: 460 Camshaft Removal Help

The parts that you have noted are the typical combination of parts used for the 1979-1985 460 truck engine. All thos partiular parts, with the proper prep, can handle/support 500 hp or more (depending on the component in question).

400hp is no issue whatsoever with the stock rods that you have. Keep rpm at 5500 or below and the oem connection rods should be fine for miles and miles, assuming the installation of ARP Wavelock rod bolts and proper rod reconditioning. Higher rpm is possible from the stock rods; risk of failure increase with rpm.
